NFL Draft ArchiveWeekend house keepingby Ricky O'Donnell on May 8 at 3:57PM
Mark Buehrle almost threw a perfect game (and Jayson Nix went yard)
- Jim goes first: He's an anomaly because White Sox baseball can be incredibly frustrating to watch. There are guys like Jose Contreras and Gavin Floyd, who can get completely bogged down by baserunners. The bullpen can lose sight of the strike zone. The station-to-station nature of the offense often creates plenty of build-up without the payoff. Some nights, there's not even the build-up.- Cheat: Over a 100 wins later. A no-hitter later. An hour-and-fifty minute game later. A World Series (in which he recorded a save, but a not a victory) later. He's added a true plus pitch, the cutter, and I'm still not entirely sure how Mark Buehrle gets it done.I'm not really one to debate the merits of 'overrated/underrated' (that's Danny's job), but can we at least agree that Mark Buehrle has been a bit under appreciated during his White Sox tenure? I feel like he's truly going to be one of those guys that you don't know what you have until he's gone. Plus, you've got to love anyone who can make baseball - which, I'm sorry, can be unbearably slow at times - move faster. * 'Hawks win, 'Hawks win Remember my declaration that'd I'd be a better hockey fan this postseason? Eh, so much for that. By the time I got out of class last night, Martin Havlat (the best player on the team?) was putting the biscuit in the basket, only I couldn't watch it because I had to head straight to work and the ST doesn't have Versus. Alas. But I'm glad playoff hockey looks like it's living up to the hype, and I truly am upset I haven't had the chance to watch more than a couple games. School's over next week, though, so maybe, if they're so fortunate, I can witness the Western Conference Finals. And if you don't think that a Blackhawks-Red Wings series for the right to go to the Stanley Cup would be the biggest thing to happen in Chicago sports since (at least) the Bears went to the Super Bowl, you've got another thing coming. I still think it's going to be tough to get past the Canucks, though. Admittedly, I haven't watched too much of this series, but Vancovuer just strikes me as a 'professional' hockey team. They look like they know what they're doing out there. Having maybe the best goalie in the league doesn't hurt either. Brett Favre (probably) isn't coming back We shall see. * I realized we have "...along with the future stars of professional sports." in our banner, and I've been terrible at keeping that relevant. This is by far the least I had ever paid attention to the NFL Draft in my entire sports fan life, but thankfully Stompy came through his his annual (?) live blog. I'll post something on the Bears draft class soon (a podcast with my old man, perhaps?), but first lets look at a couple other young people related things. - One of my favorite cats in the game, Tom Ziller, puts together an NBA mock at the Fanhouse. I love, love, love Ricky Rubio, if for no other reason than because he could be a more effective White Chocolate, and White Chocolate was my guy when I was 12. But I wouldn't be surprised if he totally sucked. Can't shoot, turnover prone, more style than substance. I'm pullin' for him, but I highly doubt he'll be on the same level as D-Rose. - Is Stephen Strasburg the best pitching prospect in the history of baseball? Perhaps. And as my buddy Eli pointed out, if he really is as good as advertised, the Nats have to put in the bigs this year, right? Has that ever even happened before? - The National Football Post breaks down the top 20 prospects in the 2010 NFL Draft. Consider me sold on Sam Bradford, Arrelious Benn, and Taylor Mays. I think Colt McCoy is going to be a damn good pro, too (Jeff Garcia, anyone?), though he doesn't rank in NFP's top 20. Typing that I just realized, 'wait, why do I care? The Bears have a 26-year old Pro Bowl quarterback!' I'm telling ya, it won't fully set in until that first bomb to Hester, that Orton would have over-thrown/under-thrown by 10 yards. Bailamos! -- Bears Draft Iglesiasby Bobby Loesch on April 26 at 11:21AM
Juaquin Iglesias, (which is pronounced wahk-EEN... props Wikipedia), to the Bears with the second-to-last pick of the third round. He was the 99th player selected in the 2009 NFL Draft. Please don't call him Joakim Iglesias. Before the draft, I said...
Bears Nab Pool Jump Guyby Bobby Loesch on April 26 at 10:53AM
The Bears first selection in the draft came in the third round with San Diego State DL/DT Jarron Gilbert. It's easy to get a little bummed as a fan when your team drafts players you haven't really heard of... after...

Bearly Relevant: Reflecting on the NFL Draftby Ricky O'Donnell on April 22 at 1:09AM

Thursday Roundupby Bobby Loesch on March 26 at 11:42AM
First thing's first: Bulls-Heat tonight. If you remember the second-to-last game between these two teams, Thabo (RIP) was inexplicably subbed in for Derrick Rose in crunch time. He proceeded to turn the ball over on his inbounds pass and the...

Since there's nothing else to talk about, a few NFL Draft thoughtsby Ricky O'Donnell on January 22 at 2:24PM
There are few things in sports I find more annoying than the two week period between the conference title games and the Super Bowl. I've never understood the point of it. The NFL probably thinks the two weeks boosts anticipation...

Should the Bears trade up?by Ricky O'Donnell on April 22 at 2:38PM
Even with all the praise Rashard Mendenhall gets around here, the Illinois junior running back should be relegated to a backup plan for the Bears at Saturday’s NFL Draft. The Bears most clear need is offensive line help (well, after...
Top Bears draft candidates for pick 14by Ricky O'Donnell on April 21 at 2:02AM
Hooray, draft week! Really, I'm not as pumped as I usually am. Drafting linemen is just so uncool. The Bears should call an audible and draft and rights to Dwight Howard in round seven, by the way. He would have...
Updated: top 25 NFL prospectsby Ricky O'Donnell on April 11 at 4:15PM
This isn’t a bad draft class, there just isn’t a clear cut, top player like there is in most years. Long, Dorsey, and McFadden are the three best players in some order, and team needs will determine where they get...
Mendenhall visits Bearsby Ricky O'Donnell on April 9 at 4:11PM
One way or another, the Bears have to build a solid running game for next season. Of all the things that went wrong last year, the Bears total inability to move the ball on the ground may have been the...
At least the Bears have the right ideaby Ricky O'Donnell on March 12 at 6:29AM
Even though the Bears may have a shot at Rashard Mendenhall, who I believe is one of the best players in the draft regardless of position (a friend described him as a ‘poor man’s Walter Payton’, and I don’t think...

Finding the next great Bearby Ricky O'Donnell on December 21 at 2:47PM
College football's bowl season kicked off last tonight when Utah took on Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. While Illinois will capture the attention of most Chicago sports fans, there should be interest in Chicago outside of the Rose Bowl. With...
How will Tebow fare in the NFL?by Ricky O'Donnell on December 10 at 3:10AM
Because of the NFL’s age limit, Tim Tebow can’t enter the NFL Draft until after next season, at the earliest. But that doesn’t mean we can’t already start thinking about what kind of pro he’ll become. Tebow is a unique...
In-season mock draft, take 2by Ricky O'Donnell on December 7 at 5:29PM
1. Miami Dolphins- Darren McFadden RB ArkansasIn my opinion, this is pretty weak class. There are only two studs, McFadden and Dorsey, and a team as poor as the Dolphins has to take one of them if they keep the...
Trent Dilfer holds our fateby Ricky O'Donnell on October 25 at 5:56AM
As if the Patriots and Cowboys being the class of their respective conferences wasn’t bad enough, remember this: they both could have top five draft picks next year. New England’s video taping shenanigans got their own first rounder taken away,...
