Chicago Cubs ArchiveCubs Fan Tom Morello Scolds Racist Cubs Fansby Ricky O'Donnell on March 8 at 12:47AM
![]() Baseball has been back for about two and half weeks now, and we've still yet to make fun of the Cubs. This needs to end. Enter my main man Tom Morello - Rage Against the Machine guitar wizard, Chicagoan, and noted Cubs fan. On Twitter this weekend, Morello reminded me of my all-time favorite Chicago sports meme: Cubs fans have a fun recent history of racism. Take it away, Nightwatchman (read the bottom one first): Ah, so good. I can talk about this all day, but I'll keep it as brief as possible. Whenever I'm engaged in "Are Cubs fans racist?" arguments, one counterpoint that is always raised is that the Cubs have a long history of great black players who the fans loved. But, newsflash: it's a different breed of fan. The drunks heckling Milton Bradley in the Wrigley bleachers in 2009 are 20-somethings, not the same people in the stadium who supported Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, or even Andre Dawson. And yeah Cubs fans, where there's smoke, there's fire. Even Kerry Wood said it, and we all know Kerry Wood can never tell a lie. But as much I enjoy the idea of Cubs fans being stupid and racist, it's actually rather unfortunate. Cubs fans are Bears fans and Bulls fans and 'Hawks fans, and, most importantly, Cubs fans are Chicagoans. That is to say: Cubs fans aren't racist because they're Cubs fans, Cubs fans are racist because they're people. And some people are racist, especially when aided by 100 degree weather, lots of friends, and eight $7 Old Styles. The last decade was horribly embarrassing for you, Cubs fans. Get your shit together this year. Don't lob slurs at Marlon Byrd when he strikes out. Don't make signs accusing Kosuke Fukudome of being a bad driver. Stop thinking the reason your team sucks is because Mark DeRosa and Reed Johnson are gone. And while you're at it, stop throwing beer on opposing players. Listen, let's be honest: you people need all the good karma you can possibly get. Doing away with the racist stuff is the first step. Dubs Dread: Death and Taxesby Dubs on February 20 at 12:00AM
But in sports there are guarantees. Especially one very real, very BIG guarantee. Your team is going to be a loser. Every year only one team, one fan-base, will enjoy the right to be a winner. You, especially me, will not enjoy that right. We will sit and watch as another team, from another city, gets crowned the champ. Your team is almost guaranteed to FAIL.

Dubs Dread: Cha Cha Cha Cha CHANGES!!! Chicago and Free Agency.by Dubs on January 22 at 11:24AM
The off-season is the time for our team's greatest changes. With free agency dominating our major sports, change is inevitable. Some of our GM's make good off-season free agent signings--Marian Hossa and maybe Ted Lilly come to mind from the recent past, but our GM's, in this city at least, have a tendency to fuck shit up. Cubs GM Jim Hendry is a renowned off-season fuck up artist--the contracts to Kosuke Fukudome, Alfonso Soriano and Milton Bradley, to name a few, have left the Cubs pretty cap tied. The Bears = fucked. With no money (i.e. free agents) or draft picks the Bears are perpetually screwed. The Blackhawks literally cap tied themselves by not filing papers on time. Probably near the top of most embarrassing things to happen in sports since the Bulls every year. And as for Kenny Williams, I feel like there is no bigger craps player in the world. He just rolls the dice and... you never really know what the outcome is going to be. In that vein, let's take a look at the one sport that is in its off-season and the moves that help define our baseball GM's, Jim Hendry and Kenny Williams.
About The Bears... It's (Still) All Goodby Bobby Stompy on October 20 at 11:29AM
This was inspired by my friend Joe's "bring back the neckbeard" facebook status on Sunday night, among other things...Don't get me wrong, I was just as distraught as everybody else about the stinkbomb submitted in Atlanta on Sunday night. We...

Tell The Devil The White Sox Sent Ya, Metrodomeby Bobby Stompy on September 3 at 1:46AM
It was a storyline that was going to write itself. The White Sox were either going to lose their last game at the Metrodome and go out with a whimper or win and "exercise the demon" of the seventh oldest...

My advice for Tom Rickettsby Ricky O'Donnell on August 26 at 1:16AM
The best thing about Full Court Press is obviously the commenters. They love me all of the sudden, so that's kind of sweet. The worst part is that I sometimes have to write serious things about the Cubs. That's what...
Rick Telander has some advice for Tom Rickettsby Ricky O'Donnell on August 24 at 2:17AM
The headline:From Rick-T to T-Rick... LINDA COHN, LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE.The aforementioned advice is pretty great, too.1. Fix the goddamn toilets. 3. Tell your baseball guys there is only one directive: Get rid of players who don't know how or...

Brazil'dby Bobby Stompy on June 28 at 3:59PM
It's hard to put into perspective how much goodwill the United States soccer team lost today from casual soccer fans. I mean, they were up 2-0 on Brazil, and they steadily blew it. It wasn't really a flurry of goals....
Sox + Cubs = funby Ricky O'Donnell on June 16 at 2:39AM
BobbyStompy types the words "Jay Cutler" in a Gordon Beckham post. I think that means it's worth your time. Smart people hate the Crosstown Classic. Jim from SoxMachine calls Cubs-Sox "the two worst weekends of the season". Most of the...

Obligatory Thanksgiving Postby Bobby Stompy on November 28 at 1:33AM
Seeing as it's still Thanksgiving in Denver, it seemed appropriate to do a "what TUP has been thankful for in the last year"-type post. But really, it just boiled down to the Cubs yoking in the playoffs, the Sox winning...
Sox Force Game 4, ESPN Disrespects, Other Random Stuff...by Bobby Stompy on October 5 at 9:17PM
- This was pointed out in the SouthSideSox game recap thread, but how about the cheap shot ESPN took at the Cubs? Seems like piling on to me -- and I thought we were bad over here yesterday.- Not too...

Cubs get Rich Harden; all Chicago World Series inches closerby Ricky O'Donnell on July 9 at 12:45AM
We all know Rich Harden is injury prone. He’s been on the DL nine times already at age 26. He’s also seen his velocity drop a little this year. That isn’t good for his long term future as a player....
Last Word On Cubs-Sox Part 1 (And It's Not Even Ours)by Bobby Stompy on June 24 at 1:44AM
Everybody's familiar with Chuck Garfien, right? You know, the dorkier guy from the Comcast Chicago crew. Not sure who around here reads Comcast's website for news -- I go for the TV schedule and occasionally get hooked into stories --...
A few more reasons why I hate the Cubsby Ricky O'Donnell on June 21 at 1:51AM
Yeah, it's a special weekend post. Sox-Cubs is just that epic. Yesterday I let my friends say their peace on the Cubs, and I thought that was it. I try to be fairly objective in my baseball viewing, and though...

Can Mark Buehrle Win 300 Games?by Ricky O'Donnell on August 7 at 5:06PM
After Tom Glavine won his 300th game on Sunday, the immediate question became who will be the next pitcher to do it. If Randy Johnson doesn't (he's at 284), it could be a while. Some people are saying it will...
Seriously, I Feel Bad For You Guysby Ricky O'Donnell on April 16 at 2:04PM
