Cubs Fan Tom Morello Scolds Racist Cubs Fans

by Ricky O'Donnell on March 8 at 12:47AM

rage1.jpg

Baseball has been back for about two and half weeks now, and we've still yet to make fun of the Cubs. This needs to end.

Enter my main man Tom Morello - Rage Against the Machine guitar wizard, Chicagoan, and noted Cubs fan.

On Twitter this weekend, Morello reminded me of my all-time favorite Chicago sports meme: Cubs fans have a fun recent history of racism.

Take it away, Nightwatchman (read the bottom one first):

tom-morello-cubs-fans-racist.jpg

Ah, so good.

I can talk about this all day, but I'll keep it as brief as possible.

Whenever I'm engaged in "Are Cubs fans racist?" arguments, one counterpoint that is always raised is that the Cubs have a long history of great black players who the fans loved. But, newsflash: it's a different breed of fan. The drunks heckling Milton Bradley in the Wrigley bleachers in 2009 are 20-somethings, not the same people in the stadium who supported Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, or even Andre Dawson.

And yeah Cubs fans, where there's smoke, there's fire. Even Kerry Wood said it, and we all know Kerry Wood can never tell a lie.

But as much I enjoy the idea of Cubs fans being stupid and racist, it's actually rather unfortunate. Cubs fans are Bears fans and Bulls fans and 'Hawks fans, and, most importantly, Cubs fans are Chicagoans.

That is to say: Cubs fans aren't racist because they're Cubs fans, Cubs fans are racist because they're people. And some people are racist, especially when aided by 100 degree weather, lots of friends, and eight $7 Old Styles.

The last decade was horribly embarrassing for you, Cubs fans. Get your shit together this year. Don't lob slurs at Marlon Byrd when he strikes out. Don't make signs accusing Kosuke Fukudome of being a bad driver. Stop thinking the reason your team sucks is because Mark DeRosa and Reed Johnson are gone. And while you're at it, stop throwing beer on opposing players.

Listen, let's be honest: you people need all the good karma you can possibly get. Doing away with the racist stuff is the first step.

7-9 Sox recap: Sox 7, Royals 6

by Ricky O'Donnell on July 10 at 12:38PM

I’m not sure if last night’s game says more about the Sox or Royals. For the second consecutive game the Sox played horrible- the starting pitcher struggled to get through a bad Royals lineup and the offense was lifeless until...
