Nothing says "don't get your hopes up" quite like making an opposing player the centerpiece of your pre-season advertising campaign. Trust me, I know: I watched way too many Bulls games between 2002 and 2005. It seems like it wasn't that long ago that the Cubs even
needed advertising to fill the museum; now they're resorting to the type of cheap trick promotion usually reserved for such deities as the Marlins and Pirates. Oh, and bonus points for making Starlin Castro awkwardly stumble through questions about being
compared to Jeter. Real smooth. A bunch of regular Don Draper's over there.

Bulls ad campaigns during that time were horrible/awesome. I remember one TV ad that was interviews with "people on the street" about why they still went to Bulls games. One reason was "because I never give up on my team" or something, one person openly said "to see the players on the other team." Keep in mind, the entire premise of the ad was that people needed to justify why they had Bulls tickets, as if they felt guilty about it.

Then why not advertise as "Cubs vs Yankees at Wrigley" instead of "Single Game Tickets." The ad doesn't even mention that the Yankees are playing at Wrigley nor do they give the dates. nice try though.
Well, one, that would be a waste. That series will sell out no problem. But, two, the more important things, by referencing the game, it gets people to go to the Cubs website to try and buy tickets for it. Not mentioning the date of the series forces people to scroll through the Cubs schedule. Thus, once they realize they can't get Yankees tickets, they might just say, "fuck it. I'm already here" and purchase tickets to another game. It's a pretty obvious marketing strategy, including the ridiculous parallel of Castro to Jeter.
I still don't see why this is an issue. You guys (Sox fans) are weird. As Kenny has mentioned many times this off-season, in his own little marketing ploy, THE SOX WILL LOSE MONEY IF YOU DON'T GO! Hurry up and get tickets!

No S&^%t! The point is that it is sad that they have to use players from other teams in order to sell tickets. If the Yankees used Red Sox in their promotions, fans and the media would have a field day on it. Also they are only playing 3 games against the Yanks (Like they will have a problem selling those out)
I think that was a given.
Still, what Rick is trying to say, and I entirely agree with, is that this a ball club that has a top 5 payroll in baseball that prides itself on sellouts. And yet, they feel this team is so average that don't have anybody on this team they feel they can market.
He's also trying to make the point that if this organization is as proud and traditional as they claim they are, they shouldn't succumb to campaigns comparable to that of the 2000 Bulls.
And even if they have a home series against the Yanks -- a point they are weakly bringing to their fans -- there are 78 other home games played at that dive bar.

Obviously they are trying to appeal to a larger audience by targeting the throngs of Yankees fans living in Chicago. I used to work at the agency that produced these and I'm fairly certain those creatives aren't much into baseball and that there is ample cheap stock imagery of Derek Jeter. It was also subliminally intended to leave you thinking of Minka Kelly rather than the Cubs' abysmal record.
