Today would have been Cobain's 43rd birthday. Will Leitch described that as "insane," and I don't think his assessment is too far off. One of the major pluses of dying young is the idea of leaving a "good looking corpse" -- and that's exactly what Cobain did. When I think of him, one of the major images that comes to mind is his look in the famous 'Forever 27' poster... entering the room as Jim, Jimi, and Janis are all there to welcome him.
What I mean to say is: it's hard to picture Cobain as not eternally 27. Trying to predict what would have happened to Nirvana had Cobain lived is way too difficult. Cobain was incalculable. And obviously Grohl had something else to prove outside his drumming. I just like to think they wouldn't have embarrassed themselves in the way Pearl Jam did. Regardless, we'll always have the music.
I tried to stay away from the super known songs, but really, even the slightly more obscure songs are pretty famous. Whatever.
"Sliver" -- Cobain and probably less than ten other singers could pull off these lyrics with the seriousness they don't intrinsically have.
"Scentless Apprentice" -- One of, like, five beats people can recognize when drummers play solo. Another good example? The drum intro to "Undone -- The Sweater Song".
