D-Rose Named To USA National Teamby Bobby Loesch on February 10 at 3:35PM
In another step closer to continuing the delight and destruction of America's 2008 gold medal in China, Derrick Rose has been named to the USA National Team for 2010-12.  Coach K had this to say about Rose's selection: "He's improved a great deal. He's having a sensational year, especially the second half of the season, leading the Bulls back into contention," said USA Men's National Team head coach Mike Kryzewski, via teleconference today. "Derrick has made a commitment to us by being on the Select Team (Rose participated in a mini-camp in Las Vegas with 19 other younger NBA players last summer)...he's a welcome addition to the pool."Rose joins nine '08 medalists (Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Dwight Howard, Carmelo, CP3, Chris Bosh, Deron Williams, Boozer) as well as Amar'e, Billups, Durant, Russell Westbrook, Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, Odom, Al Jefferson, Kevin Love, Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez, Danny Granger, Andrew Iguodala, David Lee, LaMarcus Aldridge, Kendrick Perkins, and Eric Gordon. The players selected will be candidates for this summer's world championships and the 2012 Olympic games in London. Those are some names, man. Some notables left off were Bynum ("declined"), Rondo ("unresponsive"*), and '08 medalist Tayshaun Prince. (* - What does that mean? Unconscious?) Another interesting note: Regarding the roster's abundance of point guards, Rose's position, Colangelo noted, "That's a strong position, for certain, and that's significant because there will be times he [Kryzewski] goes small and plays more than one point guard at a time."This is pretty cool news. The 2008 team, as I beat into the ground two years ago, was incredible to watch. Rose's skill and freak athleticism would be a welcome addition to the fold. Entertainment aside, the more Rose is around the best guys in the world, the better. Picking up tips and habits from the game's elite will likely be a positive influence on Rose's game in the long run. Plus, you know, UH-MAIR-ICK-UH! GO U.S.A.! Hopefully he makes the team... though there will be some heavy competition for those point guard spots. At least Jason Kidd isn't alive to see this. |
