The grass at Soldier Field has always been a problem. I have never seen another playing surface get torn up so quickly and so regularly. This was never more evident than in Week 2 last year against the Steelers after the U2 concert. The field was decimated by the end of the first quarter, players were slipping everywhere, and it's all the announcers could talk about.
The Tribune raised
an interesting question yesterday: can Mike Martz's "Greatest Show On Turf" work on the Soldier Field's terrible natural grass, and is the Martz hire enough to get the Bears to push for FieldTurf? Sure, the logic seems shaky at best, but who knows!
The Bears and the Chicago Park District
have been open to the idea of replacing Soldier Field's grass playing
surface, and this could be the ideal time to make the change. It would
cost about $1.5 million to make the switch to an infill surface, better
known by the brand name FieldTurf, and in the long run it would be
considerably cheaper than regular re-soddings.
...
The thinking is that if the Bears do away with their grass field, it
would be problematical to go back to it. So they have to ask themselves
if it's wise to change their playing surface for the foreseeable future
based on a coach who could be a one-year stopgap.
Please do this, Bears. It would make you slightly less of a joke.
