The Ballad of Ricky-Bobby: D-Rose in the ASGby Bobby Stompy on January 29 at 3:25PM
(Note: Ricky's out this week. In his place is TUP friend, Kansas City dweller, and resident Dan Le Batard, Brian P., who has requested I don't link to his Twitter) Derrick Rose is in All-Star game. Are you now more excited for the festivities? Matt at Blog a Bull, as well as some others, have always said the Bulls don't actually have to be good this year, but people have to perceive that they're good. That way, Chicago can become a desirable free agent destination this summer. I think Rose making the All-Star game is a big step toward raising perception in a positive way. You're a former-Chicago/current-Kansas-City resident... what is Missouri's perception of Rose, the Bulls, and hell, the NBA in general? When I heard the news that Rose had made the team, my conversation went like this with my KC co-workers:
Me: Awww yea. D-Rose made the all-star team. Sup now, New England of the Midwest?
Co-worker 1: It was probably because of that dunk.
Co-worker 2: First time since MJ, right?
Co-worker 3: Doesn't he smoke a lot of weed? Like that ugly dude, the tennis player.
I think my co-worker's comments really sum up how KC views
basketball. First off, they are fans of the NBA and obviously watch
SportsCenter, however, don't follow a certain team close enough to
realize how well a guy like Derrick Rose is playing. Secondly, they're
smart enough to realize that yes, maybe Rose making the team is a big
deal because Chicago hasn't had an All-Star since Jordan. Lastly, I'm
not sure how the weed comment relates to KC's attitude towards the NBA,
but it was funny.
I guess to sum it up, KC really wants any professional
team to fill the Sprint Center, whether it be basketball or hockey. I
can say, with all honesty, that people genuinely were disappointed to
hear the Kings were likely to stay in Sacramento. Ever since I heard about the existence of the Sprint Center, I've wanted the Kings to move there. At the same time, that totally feels like a "now what?" kind of move. As in: Kansas City got the Kings!!!! ... now what? It'd almost be like if the Chiefs moved to Sacramento. In theory, exciting. But in practice, totally boring. (Not to discount Tyreke Evans in any way... as he is incredible.) With the Kings out, what NBA team would you say is Kansas City's "team"? And don't say the Jayhawks. And I'd be remiss not to get your take on the million dollar question: how do you see Chicago's off-season playing out? Oh, and here's Taj Gibson. I like him a lot and all... but you're not missing much. He's got Spurs written all over him. Anyways, its hard to say who KC's "team" is. I know you don't want
me to say it, but the rivalry between KU and Mizzou is huge. I kind of
compare it to the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry in that there's this
outlying team (Michigan St./Kansas St.) that consistently puts up
contending teams, but no one seems to care about the in-state rivalry
except alums or students that actually go to the school. Oh...and the
media doesn't really care about KU-Mizzou outside of the two states
like it does OSU-UM.
If I had to pick KC's NBA team though, it would probably be
Oklahoma City. More and more people seem to be latching onto them, and
they're really fun to watch (people love the nickname "Durantula"
around here). I'm saying this without looking at exact distances, but I
believe it's about five hours from KC and know several people that have
made the drive for a game.
That being said, it should be a good All-Star game and hopefully
some big name players will perceive Chicago as an up-and-coming team,
assuming Rose plays this well the rest of the year. He's our biggest
sales pitch by far.

After reading this post I saw nothing about the Royals. I think Kansas City is more of a baseball town than anything, with a rich history dating back to the Monarchs. The Negro Leagues National Museum is even located in KC. The problem with the Royals is that they've put such a shitty product on the field for so long, that the fans have given up on the team and francise. The town needs to be revived back to the glory days. PINE TARRRR!!!! I think two teams to look towards for possible business plan templates would be the Cubs and Marlins, two very different styles, but ones that work. The Cubs always make it look like they are making an effort with the team, and for the most part in the big picture they are competitive, thus keeping the fans in tune with the team. The Marlins on the other hand, have a very different style with a ton of volatility. Their plan is to build their farm system until it all comes to fruition simultaneously and they win a world series about every 6 or 7 years. After that they have a firesale and build it up again to win another world series 7 years later. This is another model that works, because they are at least winning a world series. The Royals need to change something from the top down because that city, as a sports town, has it's greatest upside in baseball.
I'm not offended at all, but I think calling KC a baseball town is both right and wrong. Yes, the Monarch history and the Royals in the 80's are pretty cool, but KC has always been a Chiefs city. I would say the history with Lamar Hunt and the AFL is more significant than the shitty baseball team "we" call the Royals.
Well done, team.
Ricky, I appologize for going a little off topic. My angle was to bring an outside perspective to Chicago sports...so I guess the fact that I didn't talk a whole lot about the Bulls sums up how a city with no professional basketball team really feels about them. Eh...I guess its better than faking knowledge about the Blackhawks.
Eh...I guess its better than faking knowledge about the Blackhawks.
We coulda nailed that.
Just read another article in the Times stating that da Bears might have a problem with Mike Martz due to his "pass first" philosophy.
What was Marshal Faulk ... a mirage?
In 1999 he ran for 1,381 yards, and another 1,350 in the year 2000, with 5.5 & 5.4 yards per carry averages respectively. (not to mention the yards he made catching the ball)
When was the last time any Bear running back even sniffed a 5.5 yard average over the course of a season? Can you say, "never"?
Looks to me as though Martz has already forgotten more about running the ball than Bus Driver Smith even knew to begin with. Smith's teams get off the bus stumbling, and tripping over their own feet.
The Bulls are playing well right now, but even if they win a series or two in the playoffs, look for J.R. to shitcan Vinny when it's over with.
He has a tendency of replacing guys who do "ok" with guys he thinks will do better. (see: Doug Collins / Gene Lamont)
Collins had them going on a nice upward curve, advancing deeper into the playoffs each year when he got the boot. But Lamont is the poster boy for every "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" owner in professional sports.
In October of '94 he was a division winning Coach Of The Year.
31 games into the '95 season, he was shown the door.
It's funny, but unlike the Bears, who were looking for any excuse they could find to retain Lovie, the Bulls will be looking for any excuse whatsoever to fire Vinny.
At least in his case, they won't have to look very far.
