Now Playing: Derrick Rose in "The Leap"

by Ricky O'Donnell on January 26 at 2:26PM

http://www.tremendousupsidepotential.com/img/derrick-rose-all-star.jpgYet another reason why I don't gamble on sports: I would have bet anything the Bulls were going to lose last night to the Spurs. Rose had flu symptoms, Noah was battling the dreaded plantar fasciitis, and after two consecutive road wins against superior teams, the Bulls were due for a loss.

But then that didn't happen.

The Bulls jumped out to a 15-4 lead, their hot shooting continued throughout the night (outlier!), and Rose and Noah were able to match San Antonio basket for basket down the stretch.

Make it three wins in the row for the Bulls on this West Coast road trip. Seriously, when's the last time that happened? Without looking it up, I can only assume we're talking about the MJ days.

Rose was phenomenal again, just as he's been all month. It took him 23 shots to score 27 points, and he didn't get to the line once, but.....whatever. We'll worry about him becoming a more efficient scorer once he has better teammates and a real coach. For now, I'm fine with him taking lots of shots - someone has to shoot.

By the Horns had this to say about Rose:

If you want to thank someone, thank Derrick Rose. This kid has been on fire for almost two months. Rose has scored 20 or more points in 15 of his last 21 games, including four games with 30 or more. In January, he's averaging 23.3 PPG, 4.5 RPG and 6.5 RPG while shooting 51 percent from the field. Rose has mastered the pull-up jump shot. He has developed a killer running, one-handed floater. He can penetrate seemingly whenever he wants.

Frankly, he's playing like an All-Star.

Zoner at Pippen Ain't Easy added:

Rose is becoming a killer in the Dwyane Wade mold. He's shooting the J with precision and is knocking down pull-up jumpers, leaving defenders twisted ankles. If LeBron and Wade are watching Sportscenter recently, they might be scratching their chins wondering if Chicago is indeed the best place to go to win rings for the next decade.
Let hold off on the Rose = Wade talk for a bit, if only because no one in this league is better at getting to the foul line than Wade, and Rose obviously struggles with that part of his game. But if we really are watching D-Rose make The Leap and not simply just a "good month", then Zoner's point about LeBron-Wade taking the Bulls more seriously as a free agent destination is a good one.

Welcome, Devin Brown. Peace Out, Salmons?

Yesterday, Arin asked me on Twitter what I thought of the Aaron Gray for Devin Brown swap, and I said "Whatever. I'm definitely cool with it, but adding a ninth man probably won't make that big of a difference."

Actually, Brown is better than I thought. He started 37 games this season for the Hornets. He's more than a ninth man. He should fit right in with the Bulls, too -- he's just barely shooting 40 percent! Which is terrible. But whatever, he's way better than Pargo, and that's all that matters. It was a very nice nothing-for-something trade for the Bulls, as Matt deemed it.

Now I'm wondering if this means Salmons is going to be shipped somewhere for expirings. If that's the case, then this is an even better trade for the Bulls.

A common misconception: the Bulls don't actually have tons of cap space. As it stands, they may not even be able to get one max contract free agent, depending on a) how much the cap drops, and b) if Salmons decides not to opt out.

Basically, to guarantee they have enough money for Wade/Bosh/Amare/Idon'twanttogetmyhopesupandlistLeBron, the Bulls need to ship out Salmons. In getting Brown - who also expires after this year - the Bulls are making sure their chances this year won't take too much of a hit once Salmons is dealt.

Good move, Bulls. Hey, you don't hear that here every day.

Is it also a leap to think that Lovie might have to be both the defensive AND the offensive coordinator next season? Nobody seems to want either job. On the bright side, look at all the money the McCaskeys will save.

It's em-BEAR-ass-ing
