Jon Kitna, Troy Aikman Endorse Mike Martz For Bears Offensive Coordinatorby Ricky O'Donnell on January 11 at 5:13PM
The race to resurrect the Bears' offense lost a candidate this morning, when the people's choice, Jeremy Bates, decided to follow Pete Carroll to Seattle. There are plenty of names still floating around though, from Packers' QB coach Tom Clements to Jim Fossil. Al Saunders - friend of the stars! - is in the mix as well. The front-runner, though, clearly seems to be Mike Martz. We all know the story of Martz, the evil genius who transformed Kurt Warner - with a little help from God! - into the gloved touchdown-throwing savant we know today. Martz was ripped on Wednesday by former Rams GM Charley Armey, who said of Martz: ''He's the worst thing that could happen to any young quarterback". Jon Kitna, apparently, disagrees. Troy Aikman is on board, too. "I think it would be a good fit. When Lovie Smith got the job in Chicago, the first hire he made for his coordinator was Terry Shea. He wanted a wide-open offensive attack like what they ran in St. Louis while he was the defensive coordinator, and Terry Shea was in that system there at the time in Kansas City. So I don't believe that Lovie Smith is opposed to that style of offense. ... I believe Mike Martz can come in and solve a lot of those (offensive) problems."For the record, I'm all for Martz. It's not because I think he'd be great or anything (though I wouldn't rule it out), but more because he seems like an easy guy to fire after one season. My current thinking regarding the Bears looks like this: they sucked in 2K9, they'll probably suck again 2010. If it happens, Lovie and Angelo will both be gone. The Bears may have been too cheap to eat $11 million to axe Smith this year, but they'll pull the trigger for half of that after next season if this team is 5-11 like they should. So the new GM will pick the new head coach, the new head coach will pick new assistants. The Bears will restart, just like they should be doing right now. I hate to be so pessimistic, but it's already so hard for me to see next season as anything other than a lost year. Martz would at least add excitement. While some, like Dubs' boy David Haugh, have touted him as a "safe hire" because he has so much experience, anyone who thinks there is anything stabilizing about Mike Martz is either a) insane, or b) hasn't been paying attention the last 10 years. Martz is deranged. His offensive systems are chaotic, if not effective. He's basically the NFL's version of The Joker. So 2008. |

They say that the third time is always the charm, but in the Bear's case, Martz might prove to be the third strike.
I doubt that someone with his credentials (and ego) relishes the idea of taking a short term job like this, especially when he knows that he was third choice on Angelo's short list of candidates, behind a college coordinator, and an untested QB coach.
If I were Martz, I'd say, "Thanks, but no thanks.".
rick this has nothing to do with the Bears but everything to do with LT being awesome:
