Please Stop Telling Derrick Rose to Become Steve Francisby Ricky O'Donnell on December 16, 2009 at 12:51PM
Following in the footsteps of Jay Cutler, Carlos Quentin, Matt Forte, Alfonso Soriano, and seemingly every other star athlete in this town, Derrick Rose is going through a bit of an underwhelming season. Most everyone expected him to take a leap forward this year, to establish himself as a perennial All-Star. Through the first 23 games, it hasn't happened. Rose looks like pretty much the same guy we saw last season. There are reasons for this, of course. Blame it on poor teammates, worse coaching, or a lingering ankle injury that he just now appears to be getting over. But that hasn't stopped some from wondering if Rose really is as good as we thought he was. More precisely, people want Rose to start scoring more. It's easy to see why he's come under fire: the Bulls' offense is currently ranked second-to-last in John Hollinger's team offensive efficiency ratings. These Bulls needed overtime just to hang 96 on the Warriors a few nights ago, a team that gives up over 111 points per game. The Bulls offense is a train-wreck. If anyone is capable of salvaging this mess, it's Rose. Still, I like the way he's handling the first round of on-court criticism he's faced in his career.
We shouldn't want Rose to turn into a gunner. Yeah, it would probably be beneficial for right now, but Rose isn't going to be teamed with a supporting cast this pathetic forever. At 21, why would we want him to start developing bad habits? Just so the Bulls can win a few more games now? It doesn't matter, the Bulls aren't winning anything this season anyway. We've known that from the start. Rose doesn't need to "shoot more", he needs to start scoring more efficiently. He scored 21 last night against the Lakers, but it took him 22 shots to get there. Against Golden State, Rose took 22 shots, and only scored 15. So yeah: Rose is shooting plenty. The Bulls just need these shots to start falling, and Rose needs to start making his way to the foul line more often. * Bonus quote from last night via the Zen Master.
