The Hybrid: Alright, Iowa -- I'm in. I'm Totally In. We Die Together.by Bobby Loesch on October 29, 2009 at 7:23AM
I've been writing about college football for a decently long time here at TUP, and if there's one thing I'd never be accused of, it's having a pro-Iowa bias. If anything, it'd be an anti-Iowa bias. I just can't ever seem to take them very seriously. But after last Saturday's last second super-victory over MSU, I am in. Iowa = Will Smith. I, unfortunately = Martin Lawrence. Long story condensed, I had to go through a lot to watch the Iowa-MSU game. I got held up at work for an hour, the original bar that claimed to have the Big Ten Network didn't, I drove through seven different flood zones aimlessly, and, at one point, I drove down this stretch of road in the pouring rain where teenagers were randomly jumping out in front of moving cars... it was as if they were trying to get people to crash. It was so surreal. I was pissed then, but looking back, it's more funny and ridiculous. Because I lived. But anyway. I made it to a TV for the second half (major props to the Firkin Tavern in Ewing, New Jersey). And when Ricky Stanzi connected with Marvin McNutt on that 4th down with two seconds left. Jesus. I was close to life support. I mean, those bastards at MSU ran a hook-and-ladder to try to put us away. That's Boise State shit right there. Honestly, it seemed appropriate. Iowa has ridiculously won its fair share of games this year. They might has well have lost ridiculously, too. But it didn't happen. Iowa, who had no offense to speak of all day, marched down the field and scored. The game-winning drive had so much purpose, so much focus... so much execution. It almost reminded me of Squints cheating a kiss with Wendy in "The Sandlot." Was it legitimate in any way? Eh, not so much. But you had to be impressed with their cute determination. Iowa kissed a victory. They kissed it long and good. Iowa's push to No. 4 in the BCS about burned down the state of Iowa on Sunday night. People were stoked as hell. I didn't fully understand. Weren't they No. 6 last week? So just up two spots, right? I suppose it was the premise of vaulting Boise and Cinci. I'm not totally sure. Doc Saturday actually has Iowa at No. 1 in this week's version of his BlogPoll ballot. The Hawkeyes are good because: Iowa has beaten six BCS-conference teams with .500 or better records, twice as many as any other undefeated team except Alabama... and handled the best of those with roughly the same aplomb as the SEC killers, whose big overall margins of victory came via blowouts against cupcakes. The Hawkeyes are in trouble because: The best arguments against the Hawkeyes right now are their close calls against their only pushovers, Northern Iowa and Arkansas State, but I'm willing to call it a a, 1b and 1c situation and give Iowa the benefit of the doubt for putting more, better skins on the wall. But that's just this week -- the call is close and certainly won't survive Florida beating Georgia or Alabama beating LSU over the next two weeks, when the Hawkeyes' schedule lightens considerably against Northwestern and Indiana. He ends it with probably the truest thing one can say about college football: As always, everything will be completely different next week.Even the quotes coming out of Iowa camp are a bit weird. ESPN's Adam Rittenberg has a great post from today called "For Hawkeyes, style points not their style." You can say that again. "Realistically, I still have a hard time picturing us in the top 10," head coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday. Perhaps too candid? Then there's this: This attitude is nothing new for Ferentz, who told me way back in the spring, "Nobody's going to mistake us for Southern Cal."Probably the most accurate assessment of Iowa football, ever. Then it ventures into borderline depressing territory. QB1 Ricky Stanzi: "We're not trying to be the prettiest car or whatever metaphor you can use..."You just have to be honest! We are who we are! We're sorry we're not better yet! Haha. And I'll let Kirk take us on home with his brand of humility mixed with nonsense. When I asked Ferentz if he'd like a 21-point win right about now, he started laughing.Uh, yeah. Sure. This season has been too insane to simply be on the fence anymore. I'm committed, Iowa. I'm in. We may go down in a big fiery crash of exploding death. But it will be together. Break my heart. Ride or die. But let's move on. This week's slate of games is even better than last week's terrific slate. Slate, slate-slate, slate slate. THE HYBRID (I kind of liked this big-ass font last week, so maybe keeping it around? maybe?) Quick, Selective Hits On The (unbeaten teams noted) 1) Florida (7-0) -- Only No. 1 because of the flawed human polls. I'd make fun of them skating by Mississippi State last week, but, you know, Iowa. 2) Alabama (8-0) -- 'Bama beats Tennessee on two blocked field goals, and they're heroes. Iowa beats Northern Iowa on two blocked field goals, and they're frauds. Actually, that's fair.3) Texas (7-0) -- I'm in weird territory with Texas. I like them and all, but I desperately want them to lose so Iowa can leapfrog them in the polls. BUT, if I could look into the future and find out Iowa will end up losing anyway, I'd probably regret rooting against Texas because they're probably the biggest threat -- outside of 'Bama -- to beat Florida. College football, man. 4) Iowa (8-0) -- This just feels so weird. 5) USC -- This is still going on, huh? 6) TCU (7-0) -- Shanoff ranks these guys as the No. 1 team in the nation. I can't say I disagree with that assessment. 7) Boise State (7-0) -- The descent continues... 8) Cincinnati (7-0) -- Also in the Texas zone. 9) LSU -- Top 10 still? Really? Have they beaten anyone? Ugh, I'll check. Oh. Yeah, they sort of have. Well, they've got 'Bama next week. 10) Oregon -- A chance to erase all the demons of the Boise loss this week. How far up in the polls can the Ducks get with a victory over USC? 11) Georgia Tech -- Beat Virginia last week on the strength of only eight pass attempts. I have this theory that sportswriters probably love covering this team because all the running plays make the game go by fast. 12) Penn State -- Nice victory at the Big House. Penn State isn't bad like I thought. They might be just be mediocre yet! 13) Virginia Tech 14) Oklahoma State -- Super RIP to Dez Bryant this week, who is officially suspended for the season. Couldn't have come at a worse possible time. 15) Pittsburgh -- I haven't seen enough of them to know if they're actually good. But the mere prospect of them being good delights me. 16) Utah -- They play TCU two weeks from now. 17) Ohio State -- I almost regret defending them last week. Their stupid victory against Minnesota got the Pryor Is Back! stories in full swing. College football (and the NFL) are way too "the current game and current week means everything" sometimes. Seriously. Imagine if the Cubs were in this huge slump, but then they beat the Pirates one time. No one would care because they'd have to play them two or three more times, then, without a week off in between, they'd probably play another 5-10 games in a row. Did I just really give a reason why baseball is better than football?! It's best that we move on. But remember: OSU beat Minnesota, sportswriters. Minnesota. 18) Houston -- They're supposed to be high octane passing, but I just picture them to be boring. As covered in the first edition of this column, it's probably Antowain Smith's fault. 19) Miami (FL.) -- Last week's loss was a stomach punch. 20) Arizona -- Their ranked-ness just gives Iowa one more impressive victory. 21) West Virginia -- I can't ever see Noel Devine in a highlight reel and root against him gaining yards. But against UConn? After that player passed away? That was tough. 22) South Carolina 23) Notre Dame -- They are the Michael Myers of the Top 25. Just DIE! 24) California 25) Mississippi Any Sweet Games This Weekend? As always, we'll start Thursday night... North Carolina at Virginia Tech (13): My UNC obsession continues. But not really, because this is going against the World Series. And in a New Jersey newsroom, the channel's not getting changed. Indiana at Iowa (4): I'd make my usual "I'm the only one who is interested in this one!" joke, but come. on. Iowa has played nothing but close games this year. They're down to their third string running back. A starting OL is out for the year. This could either be close and exciting, or they could roll Indiana, and the blowout would be newsworthy in and of itself because Iowa winning big just hasn't happened much this year. Cincinnati (8) at Syracuse: Unbeatens on the road will probably be making this list from here on out. Plus the inclusion of Greg Paulus. Georgia vs. Florida (1): ESPN had some stupid story about how Florida is still upset about the massive team celebration Georgia did in the end zone two years ago while playing the Gators. Florida used it as motivation for last year's victory, but apparently, it's fueling them as well this year. A player said something about how they couldn't just let it go after one year. Some analyst was like, "they'll be paying for that for a long time, because Florida isn't going to forget about it anytime soon!" I, on the other hand, am willing to bet Florida will forget in another two years or so. You know, when the team experiences one hundred percent roster turnover. Just a theory. Michigan at Illinois: Now this, this is your example of "I'm the only one who is interested in this one!" UNLV at TCU: Not even on TV, but it'll be interesting keeping tabs on TCU for a while. Washington State vs. Notre Dame (23): Cougars! Irish! Alamodome! NBC! South Carolina (22) at Tennessee: I really hope Tennessee's bad ass defense mixed with South Carolina's crap ass offense is enough to put the Gamecocks out of the rankings for next week. They are Florida State boring. Texas (3) at Oklahoma State (14): OH BABY! Please, please, please, please be good. USC (5) at Oregon (10): If you can only watch one game this week, please make this your choice. I promise this game will be good no matter what. Any result is compelling. Big Ten Rant Get a championship game, jerks. College Football Bandwagon Every year, once my actual favorite teams have been eliminated from the national title picture (by, you know, losing just one game), my buddy Ryan and I create what we call the "College Football Bandwagon" which mostly consists of a list of all the undefeated BCS conference teams minus Notre Dame (and this year, Florida). The goal of the CFB is to fake feel good about yourself when your "team" makes the national championship. Plus it gives you invested rooting interests. College Football Bandwagon 2009 -- Not yet. Dan Shanoff I'm a long time reader of Shanoff, he's probably in my Top 5 online sportswriters, and he's usually the first thing I read every morning, but as a national columnist, his Florida bias has gotten out of control in recent years (most notably acknowledging no case for Michigan to play for the national title in '06 and creating TimTeblog.com in '09). We'll use this space to make fun of him when he says insane UF stuff which usually happens weekly. So Mr. Perfect Tim Tebow shirked his media obligations after last week's victory. There are two schools of thought, first negative, second positive. Theory 1) He was so upset with his performance, that he ducked the press because he didn't want to face the music, or Theory 2) He wanted to spend time with his former offensive coordinator (the current coach at Mississippi State) and wouldn't have time to do that and the media. In this week's Tebow article, Shanoff tries to actually take the Side #1. That's right, Shanoff tried to criticize Tebow. In that attempt, he casually sneaks this one in there. ...most folks are willing to stipulate that he is college football's all-time personification of leadership.Uh, what? No? No! Ugh, you suck. What They Said -- A Take On Others' CFB Takes Headline of the week: Lil Wayne certifies Lane Kiffin, official balla Great one at Doc Saturday. - Lost in Bob Griese's "offensive" taco comment, Lee Corso also made a pretty great comment last week. It's the video at the top of the post. Also included: the Bob Griese taco comment! It's funny, we decide we're offended by something, then we play it over and over and over again. This happened the most with the Don Imus "nappy headed hoes" thing. - THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN! ... Whenever I feel bad for stereotyping the South as a bunch of racist idiots, stories like this come out, and I no longer feel bad. Deadspin probably had the best take on this story: Ole Miss is trying to crack down on students chanting "The South Will Rise Again" at the end of one of their fight songs. With an anemic four touchdowns in SEC play, it makes you wonder when they heard the fight song enough to criticize.Haha. - My favorite line of the week, from Black Heart Gold Pants: "If the Hawkeyes filled out an eHarmony profile this week, the computer would probably keep it for itself." - I love Mel Kiper, Jr. I think he's excellent at a very difficult and scrutinized job. But Jimmy Clausen as the No. 9 pro prospect in this year's NFL draft?! When it comes to drafting and coaching, I try not to get too authoritative -- in general -- because, I mean, who the hell knows anything about anything? But Jimmy Clausen is not ready to go pro or be pro. Not in any way. Zero stars, Iowa sucks and you like little boys.
I love Mel Kiper, Jr.
I'm guessing you haven't watched many ND games this year. Jimmy is insanely polished. He has had a personal NFL-style QB coach since he was 12. His accuracy, arm strength and new found ability to create plays with his feet (pocket presence) make him ready NOW. I do not want to see him go as a ND fan, but I would argue he is more NFL ready than Colt, just because of style played at each school.
I've watched Notre Dame tons this year. I think he's way less ready than Brady Quinn was. And Quinn's been struggling in the league so far.
Brady Quinn was FAR less accurate than Jimmy. Far less. Which is so damn important in the NFL. His vision is outstanding too. Maybe I am wrong, but he seems like he is playing a video game out there. It reminds me of what Big Ben was doing at Miami (OH) when I was there... then again, maybe another year would be good.
Brady Quinn was FAR less accurate than Jimmy. Far less.
That's a pretty hyperbolic thing to say...
Quinn (2004-2006): 54.1%, 64.9%, 61.9%
Clausen (2007-2009): 56.3%, 60.9%, 65.2%
Not too far off at all, I don't think.
But no, you're right about him being readier than Colt. But I don't think that's saying a whole lot. I mean, Kiper has him ahead of Colt (19th) anyway.
Bobby, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment. Just last week you were talking about how Iowa has three win-able games coming up, but because they're Iowa, they are all going to be tough, with a loss likely.
I'm rooting for everybody winning out: Iowa, Cincy, Texas, TCU, Boise, Bama/Florida, and Oregon topping USC this week. Maybe the computers will combust? No second SEC team? No USC? All the while a three-loss ACC school gets a big game. Hell will break loose.
As for Jimmy Clausen, I am going to have to agree with Dubs for the same reasons.
Nice post though. One star guy is out of his mind.
Phil,
You're probably right about the disappointment (definitely right about the disappointment). It's just that... Iowa won those two road games I was worried about, they have three winnable home games left (Indiana, Northwestern, Minnesota [who just lost Decker]), then Ohio State on road. And that's it. From a spread standpoint, they should be favored in all those except OSU and the bowl game.
So if I'm going to get burned by this team, I don't want to do it half way. Poker metaphor? I'm all-in. Swimming metaphor? I'm divin' into the deep end. NASCAR metaphor? ... I got nothin'.
"How good is Jimmy Clauson?" has easily been my most debated topic of the college football season.
I don't know, I think he's good. First rounder this year, top 10 (maybe No. 1?) if he comes back and tears it up his senior year. But, like you said, nobody knows anything, especially not me. There was a time when I actually thought I knew stuff, but those days are long gone.
The one guy who really looks like he could be an elite NFL player to me on ND is Michael Floyd. Is it too much to think he could be in that Andre Johnson/Larry Fitzgerald/Brandon Marshall mold? I'm not saying he's as good of a player as those guys (or even as good of a prospect for the first two), but he's big and fast and strong and seems somewhat tenacious. If Clauson comes back, I think Floyd could be a darkhorse Heisman guy in 2010. The only thing holding him back is that a) he's not a quarterback, b) he's not white. Since white quarterbacks always win the Heisman (which is why it's stupid). But the ND angle may be enough to trump his non-whiteness. But I guess if he's as good as I think he could potentially be, that means Clauson is good, so they'd just give it to him.
There's a reason college football is my least favorite sport. Many of them.
/And, yes, I realize there's a 98% chance I'm going to read this 14 months from now and wonder if I was on drugs while I wrote it.
You're right about Floyd. To put it in perspective, as amazing as Golden has been (121 yds/gm, 8TDs), Floyd was Jimmy's #1 before he got hurt. That is pretty scary.
Ricky,
Before we start singing Michael Floyd's praises, let's see if he can stay on the field for more than 5 games a season.
And Zach, there is no way at all that the guy who predicted four national championships at his press conference is even close to ready for the NFL next year. Any team that would spend anything higher than a 3rd or 4th round pick on Clausen are idiots. And if Clausen leaves early to go pro this year with Floyd, Golden Tate (who is a much much much better reciever than Floyd), Armando Allen, and Kyle Rudoplh all coming back next year, he's an absolute idiot. I mean, it's not like the guy or his family are hurting for money.
Sorry for my ranting I just have a very strong opinion on ND football. By the way, the new site looks great Ricky, well done.
That's what I feel all this Jimmy Clausen backlash is about... ND hate. Look at it from a non-hate position... Jimmy is really effing good. Period. If you are going to hold something against him he said when he was 17-years-old, you're no better than Mariotti. As far as Tate vs. Floyd. They are two very different receivers. Floyd has a chance to be a big outside, deep threat because of his size (6'3''), where
Ignore this one.

If you are going to hold something against him he said when he was 17-years-old, you're no better than Mariotti. As far as Tate vs. Floyd. They are two very different receivers. Floyd has a chance to be a big outside, deep threat because of his size (6'3''), where Tate at 5'11'' has the ability (speed, shiftiness, hard to tackle) to be a very good inside receiver, much like a Wes Welker. Tate's size will limit him on the sidelines, because NFL CBs are just as fast as him. The difference always comes down to the size and speed combination, something Floyd has. Just saying. Also love the debate here on TUP today.
I just think they do a lot of isolation/downfield stuff, and he hasn't had a lot of great games against good defenses.
I guess, last week he was hitting that 5-12 yard route like it was nothing. Sometimes from the other hash with ease. BC played really soft and he had to gain all his yard 8 at a time. Plus, I think it shows just how good he is that he can hit that deep ball so effectively all the time. That is not an easy pass to perfect. He just seems to have all the throws is what i guess i am getting at.

Is it safe to assume this is the most you'll ever be into a non-Chicago World Series? For the rest of your life? I can only imagine living in NJ it's impossible not to kind of get swept up in that thing.
The odds are still 200/1 that you know who Matt LaPorta is before Opening Day 2010, though.

It is fuckin' awesome, man. Say what you want about Phillies or Yankees fans -- I'm sure people have their issues or whatever -- but these people are real, diehard, baseball fans. Being in the crossfire is great.
The odds are still 200/1 that you know who Matt LaPorta is before Opening Day 2010, though.
I have no idea who Matt LaPorta is.
Is Matt LaPorta still legally brain-dead?
Good shit Stompy. Don't sleep on Houston though, Case Keenum's arm is awesome. Minus that one slip up against UTEP and they would be in the TOP 10 still. They fell from 12th to out of the polls with that one loss. They have beat Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Mississippi State. I'd say they are 2 Legit...2 legit to quit
Arin,
I really wasn't sleeping on them. I was more making fun of myself because I haven't seen them play (outside of highlights) and my only association with them is a Patriots running back who gained 3.0 yards on every carry, no more, no less, and was the starter on their first two Super Bowl title teams.
@Danny You're comments about Clausen are hilarious for various reasons. First off, a month ago you told me it was ludicrous to think he was better than a fifth-round pick. That has since been dropped to a third. Secondly, you have yet to give me an argument as to why he isn't a first-round pick other than "he isn't good." You have a "strong opinion for ND football," yet your opinion is far from strong because you have nothing backing it up other than he would be an idiot to leave school with all the talent around him.
Why is he not a first-round pick? Please inform me. Is he not ready? (Please tell me that is not your argument, because I will tell you to look at his sick numbers- without his number 1 receiver). Is he dumb? (You're saying he'd be dumb to leave Notre Dame with all that talent, yet at worst he would be the second quarterback taken, probably a top 5 pick. You instead prefer he wait out for his senior year, where he could improve four spots, possibly be the Number 1 pick. Or he could possibly take the third snap of the year, roll out a little to his right, throw the ball and then get tackled by a 300-pound man who puts all his weight on his shoulder, which immediately separates, putting his first round in jeopardy. If you ask me, it'd be dumb to not take the Number 5 pick money). I will cease on this argument when you give me a legitimate reason as to why he is no better than a fifth, no wait, fourth, no wait third-yeah, third-round pick. "He isn't good" isn't going to cut it.
I'm not done. Danny, you continuously talk about how Allen, Tate, Rudolph and Floyd will be back. But you are acting as the ignorant fan I know you're not and totally forgetting the fact that four of five guys on the line are seniors. In college it all starts with the line. Look at 2007 Notre Dame, or 2008 Notre Dame if you need examples.
Is this the weekend where all Big 10 fans need to become Oregon Ducks fans? I know USC is not anywhere close to as good as they were last year, but their big game preparation is second to none and I don't think the Big 10 can take another pounding a-la Illinois a couple years ago. Plus, if Iowa keeps doing whatever the hell they are doing and Penn State wins out the Big 10 could be looking at two BCS bowl games. Maybe Iowa is what the Big 10 needed to turn the conference image around?
Personally I don't believe this because I think Iowa won a game based on the weather and Daryl Clark having his worst performance ever, college or below probably. It is also hard to argue how good their strength of schedule really is. Yeah they have lots of opponents with above .500 winning percentages, but when some of those teams are Big 10 teams and the main knock against them is that they play no one out of conference it is hard to make a case for how good they really are. Who would have thought Arizona would turn out to be such a quality victory when it happened?
I wonder about Clausen. The advantage of him being under a Pro-style coach was the same argument used against guys like Colt Brennan, Graham Harrell, etc. with the this guy is just a system QB.
I'm not saying those guys have as much potential as Clausen, but I look at their body of work in college and have to ask what Clausen is bringing to the table that some of those "system" guys aren't/weren't/didn't.
Great article, I think you covered everything there. . . I would say freelancing is quite hard especially if you are not used to working on your own, can be quite hard to motivate yourself also. . . we all know what it is like to stare at the monitor.
