Dubs' Dread: We Are Overzealous Parents No More

by Friends of the Program on October 29 at 6:21PM

{Ed. Note: A) Don't forget about Stompy's college futbol column below. It's raining comments! Plus, I smell a TTCS classic Phil-Danny feud brewin', so that baby could touch 30. B) Everyone loves ol' Z-Dubs, right? Anyway, here's his column. I'm in a good mood today, so I guess I won't even hide it beneath the jump this time. THIS TIME.  Oh, and go Bulls.-- Rick}

BY DUBS

As a Chicago sports fan in the post-Jordan era (and minus the accident in 2005), it has become oddly routine to root for mediocrity. We have become the overzealous dad with the borderline retarded child--aggressive in our support and unrealistic in our expectations. We demand our kid be dominant and blame the coach when he doesn't play well, even though our kid does not posses the tools. This year's Bears team is a perfect example of that.

Sure they have shown signs of being good, but when it comes down to it, they lack the depth and true all-star talent to be great. They are not the Bears we once knew. They have changed. Ricky has touched on it. Their O-line sucks, their D-line is made up of backups, as is most of the linebacking crew, and I do not want to get into the secondary. But I think we, as fans, are changing too. From that overzealous dad to a more mature, "it is what it is" parent. Even the TUP comments are changing:

RFK:

I can not fucking believe how embarrassing a loss that was. It has completely ruined the season for me. Now I know they have no chance at even making the playoffs. Way to stink it up Lovie! I was defending this guy, but now I'm starting to agree with the nay-sayers. he's living off 1 super bowl appearance where he lost! They may have one of the worst offensive lines in football. They just got tore a new one by Cedric Benson and Chad Ocho Twitter and I have a Cleveland win to look forward to ? Fuck that! IF they win, which I don't think for a second will be a cake walk, all it will do is give false hope. I'm just basketball season is starting soon.

Walldo:

Is it time for spring training yet?

But is that necessarily a good thing? This is the Bears. The one thing this city irrationally fights for, lives for and sometimes pays $10,000 licensing fees for. But, because of a loss to the Bengals in week 7, we are giving up hope for the year? Maybe these are reactionary comments, comments that do not mean anything, but they sound too familiar. They sound like the cries of angry and depressed and confused Cubs fans after 2008. Their expectations were high, just like Bears fans after the Jay Cutler trade, and they were crushed, just like the Bears were by Ced Ben.

Maybe everything will change after next week if the Bears dominate the Browns. Or maybe they won't and neither will our will. I guess we'll see. But until then, lets remember, there are still 10 more weeks of football and we are only one awesome hit away from Tarvaris Jackson!!!

Other things:

My alma mater, Miami (OH), is currently 0-8 (0-8!!!) and seriously threatening to lose the rest of their games this season. But the real funny thing here is their non-con schedule next year:

Away games: Cincinnati, Florida, Missouri

Home games: Boise State, Colorado State They may be in jeopardy of going 0-24. My freshman year, Miami (OH) went 13-1 and finished in the top 10.

For real, late night TV is about to get double douced on. That's right, the unfunny Queen of "Look I'm Black", Wanda Sykes, has her own show on FOX every Saturday at 10pm CT. Now that is a MUST SEE, you guys. It gets worse... George Lopez, yes that George Lopez, has a show weeknights as well. FIVE DAYS A WEEK. Yes, FIVE DAYS A WEEK. No, I'm not kidding, FIVE DAYS A WEEK. You will now have the opportunity to watch FIVE DAYS of this EVERY WEEK:

OMG, HE DOESN'T SPEAK ENGLISH WELL!!! DID SHE JUST CALL HIM A CLOWN FACE AND TRY TO HAVE SEX WITH THAT DRIVE THRU GUY!!! OMG, "THERE ARE SOME JOBS EVEN MEXICANS WON'T DO!!!" THAT'S NOT STEREOTYPICAL AT ALL. HOW ORIGINAL YOU ARE, MR. GEORGE LOPEZ.

Die.

Last thing. I saw this on my right hand panel of my facebook home page:

Now tell me how this will not lead to sexual harassment? It is just screaming, "Hey Dubs, get drunk and then facebook stalk this girl until she gets so scared she calls the cops." Thanks, facebook. I've been looking forward to my first (shocking right) sex crime for some time now. Should be fun.

Let it be known that I came up with that siiick column name myself.

Thanks, I was really hoping for something not eye catching at all.

To be honest, my real dread is a penis disease. I fear that everyday.

Pro column name. Potentially anti the apostrophe (though it needs it to make sense).

I think I agree with you Bobby. Less apostrophe more awesome. screw grammar.

Because then you read it more as Dubs Dread (which I assume it's supposed to sound like Judge Dread?). The way it is now -- though gramatically correct -- reads as Dub-ziz Dread.

I guess maybe I shouldn't hold this against you. I thought Lemont was close enough to Naperville for you to get the reference, though. The reference, of course, is: Dubsdread is the the course at Cog Hill CC where they host the Western Open (or whoever sponsors it now). Tiger has won there like 100 times.

Maybe this is my fault for assuming people would understand this, haha. SouthwestSuburbs4Life!

I have no idea where Lemont is. And golf? Weak.

The more you reveal about yourself, the less I think of you.

In Bobby's defense, I think both references are fair, and so was my initial thought when I read it... the underrated Broken Lizards flick, Club Dread. However, now that the real slim shady, eh, reference has been explained I feel stupid as I have walked that course on one of those Tiger Woods victories and now that my brohem is a pro golfer, I should prob know better. Egg all up in my grill.

Aha! So we all thought it was something different.
