Jake Peavy will pitch for the White Sox on Saturdayby Ricky O'Donnell on September 16 at 2:49AM
We interrupt this Bears blog to bring you an important message about your favorite baseball team: Jake Peavy is alive, and he will pitch on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Field against the Royals. If you have some extra cash lying around that you're just dying to give to Jerry Reinsdorf, this is probably the day to do it. Sez Peavy: "I expect to win Saturday, and we'll have a few more starts and put to bed, hopefully, all this injury stuff. I'll show up and be ready to go at spring training," Peavy said. "Stranger things have happened, and if we get to the postseason, I'll be fine and ready for that as well."The postseason? Doesn't he realize there is a 96.78 percent chance it's not going to happen? How Baseball Prospectus comes up with these numbers, I do not know. I went to college at an art school. We had no football team, and most of the kids wore skinny jeans and rolled their own cigarettes. My allergies include pollen, mold, and arithmetic. But if BP says the Sox have a 3.22 percent chance to win the Central, they have a 3.22 percent chance to win the Central. I am not one to argue with our VORP overloads. The important thing is this: the 2009 White Sox aren't quite six feet under just yet. On Tuesday, something happened that seemingly never happens: the Sox won and the Tigers lost. It means the Good Guys sit a game under .500 and 5.5 games behind Detroit. With just 17 games left (the Tigers have 18 left), this seems like an impossible task. And it would be, if the Sox didn't play the Tigers six more times. The Sox play eight more games until face Detroit, then have the Tigers six of final nine games of the season. If they can get their deficit to four or five games, you have to think the Sox have a puncher's chance. Will be happen? Meh, probably not. The Sox haven't gotten on a roll all season, so why start now? But this is baseball we're talking about here, and crazy stuff happens in baseball. So there's a chance. Stay tuned. |
