Mark Buehrle is extra perfect. The Sox D, not so much

by Ricky O'Donnell on July 29 at 11:13AM

A few screen grabs from the Interwebs today:

a) Mark Buehrle's box score from yesterday.

Buehrle unravels!? More like Scott Podsednik couldn't catch an easy fly ball (I'll blame it on that goddamn white roof, thank you very much) and Chris Getz couldn't read a grounder that would have turned into a very easy double play. Instead, it cost the Sox (and Buehrle) five runs. Neither went as errors, but with some good defense behind him, who knows how long Buehrle could have gone Tuesday. The way he was pitching (which seemed extra fast, if possible), the Sox shouldn't have lost that game, their fifth L in the last six.

Something else that sucks (no staying positive when the Twins, the Metrodome, and white people are involved): I've been thinking of what could elevated Mark Buehrle even higher into Chicago sports lore, and the most obvious thing missing seems to be a Cy Young award. This is probably Buehrle's best chance ever at it. A win yesterday would have been No. 12 and tied him with Josh Beckett for the league lead.

Wins, of course, is the dumbest way ever to judge how good a pitcher is, but not everyone has figured that out yet. So to win the Cy Young, you need 'em, and Buehrle's got 'em. And he could have maybe had one more.

Buehrle's ERA - 3.45, good for 10th in the AL - could have been helped too if those five unnecessary runs didn't cross the plate. For the record, his WHIP is among the league leaders too, third best in the AL.

So the Cy Young watch is on for Buehrle here, even if it's a long shot (and probably dependent on Halladay getting traded to the NL, which seems unlikely).

Finally, a text from Bradwell, putting Buehrle's consecutive hitters retired streak in perspective.

"Ok the perfect game was cool and all, but holy shit. And in the fucking American League. And from a guy who's greatest pleasure is playing slip n slide on the tarp during rain delays."
Well said. Mark Buehrle: still the coolest.

Mark Buehrle, you are ridiculous.

I got my hopes up a little yesterday. I thought he could do it again.

I originally read that as "the" white people. Both ways were funny.

Haha, 'the white people' would have been so much better.
