Carlos Quentin: too intense for at-bat musicby Ricky O'Donnell on July 28 at 3:48AM
At-bat music has long been a favorite subject of mine. Many moons ago, I lobbied for the White Sox to put down the Nickleback and step up their game. Lately, I've been finding myself debating the same question over and over: if I were a pro baseball player, what song would I enter each game to? Clearly, this is all I've gone back and forth on this. Would I choose the piano intro to 'Come Sail Away'? HBK's old theme song? NWA's 'Fuck tha Police'? In my mind, each would be great. Recently, however, I think I've made up my mind: Godzilla (featuring Green Day) - Brain Stew. Unless, of course, you're White Sox slugger - and noted oddball - Carlos Quentin. It has been pointed out to me before, but now comes visual proof: Carlos Quentin enters each at-bat to dead silence. Evidence: This chart is full of lolz, no doubt. I couldn't think of anything more perfect for Thome than the intro to 'Beautiful People' (Jim Thome and Marilyn Manson, two great tastes that go great together!). Konerko to Metallica, JD to Kanye, and Bobby Jenks to 'Click, Click, Boom' seem fitting, as well. But Q! entering to -SILENCE-? Hilarious! In the aforementioned Beachwood column from last year, I suggested 'Paper Planes' for Carlos. Can you guys think of anything better? Maybe some 'Roundball Rock'? What about a little Natalie Imbrulia? Discuss. Winner gets mad respect, lots of street cred, and nothing else. Because, as you may have heard, I don't have a job. Whoooo party! |

If I was a player unhappy with my contract situation, I'd see to it that every time I step to the plate, Train in Vain by the Clash plays. If shit got real bad I'd switch it up from that classic opening riff to the third verse. Really drive the point home, you know?
When the fans were fucking with Pat Burrell pretty bad in 04, he switched his entrance music from a Zeppelin song (I forget which one) to Dirty Laundry by Don Henley. Obviously only the first few bars played, but the sentiment is clear upon viewing the first verse and chorus:
I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry
Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry
Kick em when they're up
Kick em when they're down
Kick em when they're up
Kick em when they're down
Kick em when they're up
Kick em when they're down
Kick em when they're up
Kick em all around
And that is why I will always love Pat Burrell and you should too.
Also, and I'm reasonably confident we've discussed this, I've long felt that there needs to be a Major League closer who enters to the bagpipe part of Untitled by Neutral
My at-bat song would have to be Scandal's timeless love sick anthem, "The Warrior": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT9t5nkZn8I
If I was slumping at the plate, I'd switch it to Go West's "King of Wishful Thinking": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry4iwzS4Na0
Ah. I had you pegged for Toto's 'Africa'.
The answer is Roundball rock. But if I wanted to make the pitcher uncomfortable I would go with... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIWFNZ3MA4Y&feature=related
and puckering up.
How is Pods' intro not, "Centerfold"?
For Q: "Bobby Brown" - Frank Zappa. Or maybe not.
