PEAVY (question mark, exclamation point)

by Ricky O'Donnell on July 31 at 4:10PM

So that happened out of nowhere.

Jake Peavy to the White Sox for pitchers Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter, and Adam Russell

Kenny Williams!

I think I like this trade - you'll have to excuse me, but sometimes it takes more than 30 seconds for me to decide on things like this - but holy hell. Kenny Williams. Maybe he took offense to my proclamation that Angelo's trade for Cutler was the boldest a Chicago GM has ever made. Try this on for size: three damn good prospects for a 28-year old Cy Young winner who won't pitch until September 1 at the earliest.

Madness.

A few quick thoughts....

a) Why would Peavy accept this deal now? When Peavy turned the original deal down on May 20, the Sox were 17-22, 5.5 games out of first. Now, they're 52-51, 2.5 games out of first. What I'm trying to say here is: Peavy accepted this deal because of Beckham! At least in part, right? Bacon has had as much to do with the Sox turn around this summer as anyone. The Sox weren't a legit playoff contender before, now they are. Could it be as easy as that?

b) I'm not all that concerned about dealing away Richard. His last two starts were fantastic, but he was a whole bunch of MEH before that. His floor is probably as a solid lefty reliever, which is certainly something, but I doubt he'll ever become a dependable mid-rotation guy.

c) It kind of surprised me to see Dexter Carter's name pop up. Here's what BP's Kevin Goldstein said about him on Twitter:

One of two breakout pitchers for the White Sox this spring out of Old Dominion, RHP Dexter Carter has size (6-6), mid-90s heat, nice curve.

...

To clarify, Carter touches mid-90s, sits 91-94
He was a 2008 draft pick, so he obviously has a long way to go, though.

Before we all start crying over prospects, remember, Fields and Anderson were great prospects, too.

d) Peavy's contract:

The new money kicks in in 2010, when he'll make $15 million. He'll earn $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012. The club holds a $22 million option for 2013, or a $4 million buyout.
e) Peavy's injury status: out since the middle of June, should return around September 1.

f) If the Sox can make the playoffs (big 'if' considering you may only get three or four starts out of Peavy), consider their postseason rotation: Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, Floyd. Ohhh babbbyyyyy.

f) Re-read Stompy's post on Peavy. From May 21.

g) Also worth noting: Jake Peavy once sang 'Go Cubs Go' in Vegas after a Brooks and Dunn concert. I'm sorry.

Eh, can't end on a bad note. So here:

Kenny Williams does it again. Unreal.
