About that little Derrick Rose pictureby Ricky O'Donnell on June 12, 2009 at 12:23AM
So yesterday was pretty crazy, huh?
How am I not famous right now!? The obvious comparison here is to the 7th Floor Crew thing from a couple years ago, but you'd have to multiply that times 1,000. G-reg and Co. were only a local story. The Rose picture made national headlines yesterday, and even forced an apology out of the man himself. Nuts. And to think, none of this wouldn't have happened had I not wrote that post yesterday. The real credit should go to dabullz, of course, who picked up on the photo about a week ago. All I really did was bring it to the attention of TheBigLead and WithLeather. People actually read those blogs, so without their linkage this probably wouldn't be such big news. I am a little peeved, though, that TUP (and dabullz) wasn't credited most places. Would it kill you, Chicago Tribune, to give the name of my Web site rather than citing a "non-mainstream Chicago sports blog"? ESPN is even worse. Hardwood Paroxysm was the first big blog to pick up on the story and not link back here. When ESPN wrote their story - which was on the front page - they gave a shout-out only to HP. Why? Well, maybe it's because HP is on TrueHoop's network. But whatever. As I tweeted yesterday and as Stompy added in the comments section, I do feel bad for Rose. When the post went up last night, I looked at friends and said "Operation Ruin Derrick Rose's Life is underway!". It was a joke, of course. I love Rose more than my brother and sister - and only slightly less than my parents. I'd never want to hurt the man. At first, I wasn't even going to post the photo for that very reason. And now that neither TUP or dabullz got any huge traffic hike because of it, I sort of regret it. What made the whole thing even more crazy was that I was without the Internet for about 20 hours while it was all going down. I wrote the post Wednesday afternoon because I went to the Sox game at night and knew I'd be in no condition to write it when I got back. Good thing, because the apartment I stayed at that night didn't even have the Internet (in 2009!). I called Bradwell that night - who was clearly feeling as good as I was at the time - and instructed him to publish the post and send out emails to Deadspin and everywhere else. So he deserves a lot of credit too, as do my boss at the Sun-Times (who made everyone aware of the picture) and Kyle Koster of Sportspros(e) (who passed on posting it there). I hope I didn't ruin Derrick Rose's life too much. This will blow over, eventually. As I noted in the final paragraph of my post yesterday, thank God there wasn't a handgun or any drug paraphernalia in the picture. It seems like most mainstream sites are focusing more on the gang signs, which weird because he's clearly (at least in my opinion) ripped and wearing a shirt with what appears to be pot leaves on it. * It's been a big week for me. I haven't even mentioned the fact that FJM is on Twitter (!), and dak even responded to me (!!!). So yeah. Not a bad way to start the summer here. Yesterday was my last day at the Sun-Times, at least until August. Now that I graduated though, I need a real job! Anyone want to give one to me? I'll do whatever. My email address is at the bottom of the page! Since finding a real job will probably take a looooooooong time, I may as well devote as much energy as possible to this site. Derrick Rose isn't the last person I'm taking down. You should see what I do to athletes I don't like. You're next, Carlos Zambrano. |

so back to dick jokes and sabrmetrics now.
Man, things must be rough for you with the way you complain throughout this post. I think the main reason why you didn't get credit, other than because you didn't initiate the story or add anything to it, is because people generally don't care about crummy websites like this one. This post may be the weakest I've seen here.
Eh, I don't think I'm complaining and I hope it doesn't come off that way. I guess the only thing I would have liked differently is if the Trib would have given the name of this site or dabullz instead of saying "non-mainstream...". I said up top no one really reads this site and the only reason it blew up was because a few bigger blogs picked up on it. But yeah, I really don't think I sound like an asshole here, and I hope people don't take it that way.
What I'm really upset about is that I can't change this stupid font after writing this in Word.
yeah, you are complaining. dabullz deserves credit. you deserve a cookie.
I only read the part that had my name in it, but the rest of it feels like it makes sense too.
Then where's the cookie? I'm hungry.
Writing for the paper in college, I never really cared about scooping other papers or reporters, but I have to say, I was disappointed the Trib didn't give at least dabullz credit.
Like, when Glazer scoops Mort or Michael Smith scoops Shefter... that's really more of a pride thing. Unless it's an epic scoop (Woodwerd and Bernstein comes to mind... but really that's the only major example people always talk about), it really doesn't matter who got the story; news is news. It's about the story, not the reporter, you know?
But the Trib basically had the chance to (probably) blow up at least one blog's traffic. And the dismissive "non-mainstream" tag killed any chance of that. That's what bums me out.
I tried to get this over in the post, but I might have failed. I'm not saying that I should get full credit for this. Of course not. Dabullz was, to my knowledge, the first to post the picture a week ago. All the mainstream articles should be throwing it back to him. But, I'm just saying, the picture existed on his site for a week and no one said anything about it. I posted it here and it blew up. So I guess if I should get credit for anything, it's recognizing a big story when I see one. If that makes sense.
If I don't post that photo here yesterday, they aren't talking about it on the radio, on espn, and on the local news channels today. Who knows how long it goes unnoticed. Maybe forever. I agree totally with Stompy's point that news is news, but when it's something like Matt Cassel getting traded to Kansas City, we're going to find out eventually anyways. Whether Adam Schefter or Jay Glazer tells the world first, it probably doesn't matter all that much because we'd likely learn about it anyways a few hours later. But with the Rose picture, I don't think you can say that it definitely would have became a big deal at some point. I mean, it was on dabullz since June 5 and no one said anything.
That's all I'm saying. Dabullz threw down the monster slam, but I'd like to think I threw the alley oop. Really, I don't want credit, I just want to show people how weird and crazy and cool the whole thing is that my stupid blog sort of made something a big deal.
Oh, and ESPN linking to one of its network blogs was just... disappointing, to put it nicely.
Oh, and though I didn't see it covered on the local news, I saw their teaser for the story, and Rose's hands were blurred out. That was funny. Who knew?
I'm coming to get you Ricky. You have no fucking clue the pain I'm going to rain down on your entire life. I hope you like shitting into a tube because you're paralyzed from the neck down.
I have no idea why you think you deserve any credit at all. You didn't take the photo. As you've admitted, you weren't the first one to put the photo up. And for all you know, the site the Trib was referring to wasn't your site at all.
So in truth, I think you come off as a total schemer trying to grab credit for something that is not even remotely yours.
The way you start off your post by saying "So yesterday was pretty crazy, huh?" gives me, and everybody who read this, the idea that you broke the photo.
To further that, your post screams the idea that you were shorted credit.
To be perfectly honest, I don't know how you don't think you're not complaining. And I was ok with your post until you wrote the statement:
"I hope I didn't ruin Derrick Rose's life too much."
First off, this was a weak one-day story that nobody will talk about ever again. Don't flatter yourself with the idea that what you think you did would a) ruin his life at all and b) don't flatter yourself with the idea that you should be credited for "life ruining."
You need a reality check.
Joooooooooooooke. Not everything is meant to be taken 100 percent literally. I think I said my peace on this. It's really not that big of a deal.

Great article, I think you covered everything there. . . I would say freelancing is quite hard especially if you are not used to working on your own, can be quite hard to motivate yourself also. . . we all know what it is like to stare at the monitor.
