The time has come: Chicago welcomes Gordon Beckham

Yesterday, I planned on previewing the White Sox' top five prospects, but then, you know, stuff came up, and I never got around to finishing it. Now it all seems useless. The Gordon Beckham Era beings today against the A's, and I'll be there, way up high in the upper deck for a friend's birthday.

Here's what I wrote yesterday about Becks. The rest will come Thursday or Friday.

1. 3B/2B/SS Gordon Beckham - AAA Charlotte
At AA Birmingham: 38 games, 148 at-bats. .299/.366/.497. 4 HR, 17 doubles, 22 RBI
At AAA Charlotte -  6 games, 23 at-bats. .435/.417(?)/.609. 0 HR, 4 doubles, 3 RBI

Everyone knows about Beckham, the golden boy, the savior, the hair idol, the Sox' very own Derrick Rose. He's most hyped prospect I can ever remember the Sox having, and I'm not sure who's No. 2 (Maggs? Crede? Garland?).

Here's the thing: Beckham is (probably) going to be a great pro baseball player very soon. The question is when and where. He'll be up this year, no doubt. But will it be when the rosters expand in September or do the Sox view him as a legitimate solution to their third base problems?

I wouldn't have thought it at the beginning of the season, but the answer to the second question now appears to be a solid "yes". It's why they called him up to AAA - so he could get time at third without the organization having to give up on Dayan Viciedo the third baseman already (more on him later). If Josh Fields and goddamn Wilson Betemeit (Jim at SoxMachine today: "From now on, I'm only going to refer to Wilson Betemit as "Bee" upon secondary reference. It seems unfair to leather that his name has two more gloves than he does.") continue to suck, I think we may see Beckham up sometime after the All-Star break. Hide your daughters.
