Peter King is a man who writes things I agree with

We haven't focused too much on the football aspect of the Jay Cutler trade yet - which is kind of funny considering, you know, this is a sports blog - but I can assure you we'll get around to that eventually in the long and lonely months leading up to training camp and the start of the regular season. I slightly touched on some of the those "Where do the Bears stand now?" issues in an interview with MVN last month.

2. How do you think this affects the balance of power in the NFC North? Is Cutler enough to lift the Bears to the top of the division in 2009?

The NFC North has three pretty tough teams now in the Bears, Packers, and Vikings, but I honestly think the Bears have to be considered the favorite at this point. I'll go a step further: I'd take the Bears over any team in the West or the South. Maybe only the Cowboys and Giants are better in the conference. That might sound crazy, but remember only four teams in the NFC had a better record than the Bears last season, and I really think this trade (and the other moves they have made/will make by the end of the offseason) will re-energize the organization.
It appears I'm not alone in thinking the Bears are going to be pretty good. Today, SI's Peter King offers up a fresh batch midway-through-the-offseason team rankings (what?), and puts the Bears fourth, to the dismay of some elsewhere on the network. Make sure to check out the entire thing, which is five pages and does not include the term 'Starbucks' once (seriously, I did a 'ctrl + F' search for it).

Also: Peter King coming up with power rankings that feature the Bears and Patriots in the top five is a perfect storm for a 'Not Safe for Bobby Stompy' tag.

There are more important things going on tonight

'Hawks-Canucks, for the right to go to the series that determines who goes to the Stanley Cup. To me, these things always start to feel real at the conference finals. The UC is going to be nuts tonight.

Yeah, my heart kind of skipped a beat when I saw both of them in the Top 5... all pretty like that.

And as for that Boo The Birds thing, I'll take the ignorant route by skimming it and calling out a part that pissed me off:

Jay Cutler has a record of 17-20 as a starter.

This isn't like a baseball pitcher where wins and losses tells the whole story (kidding!). But seriously, I'm so sick of people using that lame-ass stat as a knock on Cutler. 16 of those were the first 16 games he ever started. Denver's D was -- not just awful -- historically bad last year. He's improved, and this season will reflect that. Plus the NFC sucks.

Using win-loss on such a young, up and coming QB to prove a point (unless it's something like how Chris Weinke is a career 2-18) is a waste of time.

Cutler's fine. He's the best Chicago's ever had. This is indisputable.

I don't know if the Bears are Top 5 worthy, though.
