Kane takes 'Hawks to the conference finalsby Ricky O'Donnell on May 12 at 3:11AM
A 'Hawks-Wings conference final would rate slightly below Bears-Packers for the NFC Title and slightly above a Cubs-Cards NLCS. It would be crazy, and truly reinforce that Chicago is one of the best hockey-towns in the country. It's what I immediately started thinking about when I realized the 'Hawks were going to win last night. I've been going back and forth on whether or not I want it to happen since. Here's the pro-Red Wings arguement in my mind: 1) The Wings are the 'Hawks biggest rival, and everybody would be really into it if they played for the right to go to the Stanley Cup. 2) If the 'Hawks are really going to solidify themselves as an NHL superpower for the next five years, they may as well go through the team of the decade to do it. Number one especially. But you have to weigh two things: does the 'coolness' of 'Hawks-Wings' trump a better chance to advance. Because if the 'Hawks played the Sharks, they'd have home ice advantage. They also wouldn't be playing the Red Wings. For those that use the "The 'Hawks are young, they'll continue to be in this position for a long time" argument for rooting for a Red Wings series, I'd like to point to the Bears after 06. They brought back nearly all the same players - nearly all of them in their prime - only didn't have half the success. You never know when the next time you'll be in a position like this again. Khabi is old. Havlat will be a free agent. I want to see the 'Hawks advance as far as they possibly can. If that means sacrificing a 'Hawks-Wings series so be it. I'm also working off the premonition that Detroit is really, really good. Maybe they're not, and maybe San Jose is legit. I know the Shark Tank is supposed to be ferocious to play in and they have one of the league's best players in Joe Thornton. We can worry about all that later though, let's just soak in the fact that the 'Hawks are four games away from playing for a championship. Good things happen when you put your home games on TV. |
