The Official TUP 2009 NFL Draft Liveblogby Bobby Loesch on April 25 at 3:53PM
Ohhhhh yes. We're gonna liveblog this sumbitch. First things first: a slightly funny picture of Stafford. More sexiness (after the jump)...As usual, all times are Central. As usual, I wish it was Mountain. 3:02PM - We're coming to you live from Washington, Iowa, where I'm spending the
draft at my buddy Ryan's apartment. Like last year and
many years before, I've been thrust into a situation where I have to
ball my way through a precarious situation of having WiFi and losing
WiFi. These things happen when you steal other people's internet. Oh
well. Still, I've got full signal and it's been nothing but smooth sailing so far. 3:03PM - Oh, man. Ryan (from the other room): Whose internet are you stealing? Bobby: I don't know, it says "NETGEAR" and I've got full signal. Ryan: I think you're stealing mine -- huh, I didn't realize I had wireless internet. Well, I feel way less cool. 3:04PM - Ryan informs me he wants to shower, so we've put the NFL Draft on hold via DVR. We're off to a pretty weak start. Still, we should be able to catch up before the second pick comes off the board... 3:05PM - Ryan puts on TNT NBA pre-game before he hits the shower, this sparks a conversation regarding Ernie's face. He attests that doctors surgically repaired his face when it was sort of messed up a few years ago. I'm thinking that he simply got better. To Wikipedia! I think I win that? 3:10PM - Ryan returns from a pretty fast shower and we begin the process of catching up. 3:11PM (actually 3:02PM) - I think Goodell got booed after welcoming people to the draft. "I guess you're all ready to get going," he says. 3:13PM - Stafford gets booed pretty bad. He smiles before getting up. How else could you react? 3:14PM - We begin an intriguing debate focusing on whether or not you'd consider taking the signing bonus money and retiring right away if you went No. 1 overall in the draft. The consensus is pulling that move would result in an immediate move to another country. 3:15PM - "I'm living the dream," Stafford says. You sure are, Matt. You sure are. 3:17PM - I go to ESPN.com to do some draft research only to see that Jason Smith was picked second by the Rams. Since we're trying to guess all of the individual picks for money, I just ruined the the bet for No. 2. Matt Stafford ruined the the bet for No. 1, so I guess we're all even. Ryan is displeased: "Get off the site." ![]() 3:19PM - Chefs on the clock. 3:20PM - Oof. Trey Wingo: Herm, last year you were trying to figure out what to do with the Kansas City Chiefs. Let's pretend you're still there... Burn. 3:22PM - It's hitting me now that the Bears don't pick for a long, long time. Pretty disappointing. Still, the Pats are rumoured (British spelling) to trade up. I have no idea who they're targeting. 3:24PM - Pick is in. Our competition begins. I've got Curry. Ryan probably does, too. 3:24PM - Pick is Tyson Jackson. We both had Curry. 0 for 1. 3:25PM - What makes Seattle picking at No. 4 (were they really that bad last year? Geez.) is they're so needy that they could go in any direction with the pick. 3:26PM - An ESPN poll grades the Tyson Jackson pick with a "C." ![]() 3:32PM - Aaron Curry drafted by the Seahawks annnnnd here come the waterworks. If I was there, I'd make fun of him for crying except I think he'd kill me. So I wouldn't. He and his family are rocking some hideous, neon green hats. 3:39PM - TRADE! The Jets move into the Browns' spot. And like that, the Sanchez drama ends. Probably. 3:41PM - Chyup. Sanchez to Gang Green at No. 5. The pick was met with mixed results, but I thought it seemed more positive then negative. Some lame Jets fan looks like he's about to start crying due to how upset he is. 3:50PM - Leave it to the Bengals to draft Andre Smith at No. 6. Character issues? Motivation issues? Their fans can't be pleased. On the upside, it's cool to see the media ("He could be falling out of the first round!") look bad. 3:55PM - The Raiders have got to be taking Crabtree. The flash and glitz that go along with him just scream "Al Davis." 3:56PM - In the biggest surprise of the draft thus far, the Raiders take DHB... Michael Crabtree looks sad. This makes me sad. DHB actually might look sadder. I'm sure Oakland does that to people. 3:57PM - ESPN shows a graphic of Raiders draft picks going back to 2004. They typically draft blazers. I guess Crabtree's broken foot was enough to spook Al Davis. 3:59PM - Crabtree is a virtual lock to go to the Jags. Take that to the bank. And deposit it.4:06PM - Or don't. The Jags take Virgina OT Eugene Monroe. So the storyline becomes: where will Crabtree land? This is just nuts. 4:08PM - You see, I totally forgot about the Jags singing Torry Holt. These are the things I need to remember when I'm telling people to take things to the bank. 4:14PM - Boston College DT B.J. Raji gets picked by the Packers at No. 9. Jay Cutler scoffs. 4:21PM - Crabtree to the Niners at No. 10. Will he be better than Jerry Rice? I do not know, but I do know people will talk about that from Day 1. Erin Pageviews.4:27PM - Penn State DE Aaron Maybin to the Buffalo Bills at No. 11. I know I said on Friday I wasn't really "for" or "against" a lot of these prospects in terms of pro potential, but I watched my fair share of Penn State games this past year, and he never really jumped out to me. 4:35PM - Moreno to the Broncos -- and it seems like the ESPN panel wants to kill Josh McDaniels. Texas DE Brian Orakpo is headed to Washington where him and Albert Hanesworth are slated to kill everything. 4:52PM - NIU linebacker Larry English (Dekalb what?!) gets picked by the Chargers at No. 16. Seeing him go from Illinois to San Diego should inspire all of us to do the same thing. I hate winter so much. 5:06PM - It appears Denver does care about improving their putrid-stink defense from last year. The Broncs take Tennesse DE Robert Ayers at No. 17. Way to show 'em, Josh! 5:13PM - Maclin to the Iggles at No. 19. With that pick, Detroit again is on the clock. I, Bobby, become ten times more interested in the draft. 5:14PM - Who will ruin their career? Who will don the fierce new Lions logo? Will Matt Millen be shot on live television while broadcasting for ESPN next year? Stay tuned. 5:15PM - I got a text from my buddy Tom which reminded me Stafford will be paired up with Calvin Johnson. Despite three or so days to think about this combo, it never actually hit me until now. Is it possible the Lions will be kind of scary on offense next year? ![]() ... ... Nah. 5:18PM - Steve Young is just... guns blazing today. I have never seen him so fired up. Five minutes into the draft, he was ranting and raving and flailing as if they'd been covering the thing for three or four hours already. 5:19PM - The Lions are officially cool. Fat Stafford? Check. Calvin Johnson? Check. Funny? Big check. Now? Okie State TE Brandon Pettigrew at No. 20. I'm not sure why, but I usually unconditionally like the top three tight end prospects in every draft. It's just such a cool position. I've heard nothing but good things about Pettigrew's ability and versality; definitely excited to watch Detroit next year. Maybe they could even double last year's win total... zing! 5:21PM - An exchange after the Pettigrew pick... Berman: Lions -- Super Bowl dark horse now? Steve Young: There's a pulse! There's a pulse! These guys are hitting their stride. 5:25 - Cal Center Alex Mack goes to the Browns, which is great, because I can finally post this: ![]() Larisa Oleynik was a total babe in "Ten Things I Hate About You." 5:31PM - Herm Edwards tries to talk about the Percy Harvin to Minnesota (No. 23) using several confusing car metaphors. I wish he'd be on this more. 5:35PM - The Pats trade to Baltimore (of course). This elicits a "duh" from me. B-More takes Michael Oher with the pick. With an incredible life story, he seems to be everybody's favorite prospect from a personality standpoint. He's actually in New York for the draft... I'm wondering if he's the last invitee still around. I think he is, but that'd be surprising... because, you know, ESPN is usually all "OHNO HE DINT GET PICKED YET!!!!" Haha, Brady Quinn. 5:37PM - "Baltimore just got a great player," says Michael Oher himself. "..the NFL's not gonna be hard for me." "I could have went in the seventh round," he continues, "when I get in, I'm gonna stay. I'm gonna play 10-plus years." He's so cool. 5:39PM - "That's a top five interview right there," Steve Young proclaims. "...that's inspiring." 5:50PM - Pats on the clock again. Bleh. 5:53PM - Wendi Nix is with the Pats and says they're trying to trade out of the 26th pick. 5:54PM - And they do just that. 5:54PM - ...to the Packers?! Aw. BOOOOO. 5:55PM - "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith plays in the background. Packers on the clock. This sucks. 5:55PM - And the Packers take USC LB Clay Matthews with the pick. From Southern Cal to crappy Wisconsin. He's smiling but has to be crying on the inside. Oh, and him and A.J. Hawk kind of look the same. 5:58PM - Members of the armed forces inexplicably come on the stage. Everybody's going nuts, and some sort of song is playing. "I feel like we're at a NASCAR event," Ryan says. 6:00PM - ESPN cuts to UConn RB Donald Brown's house. He's pretty excited. And, per the usual, ESPN has tipped the pick. Brown to the Colts. Book it. 6:01PM - "Joseph Addai is crying somewhere," I say. "Mike Hart, too," Ryan adds. 6:12PM - I know Peter King has addressed this, but I agree, too: why, on earth, would you ever take a non-Adrian Peterson running back in the first round? They could get hurt at any time, and you see undrafted RBs come into the league and succeed on a season to season basis. It just seems like the waste of a pick. 6:16PM - Are the Titans considering Beanie Wells with the 30th pick? With the running game they already have, that just seems excessive. Though, if you're their front office, you can always just throw up your arms and say "best player available!" It's like it absolves you of all criticism. 6:21PM - The Titans grab Rutgers WR Kenny Britt... and I add another to the body count of wideouts the Bears won't be drafting. 6:25PM - The White Sox, aiming to the the first Chicago team to win a game in, oh, I don't know, FOUR DAYS, kicked it off against the Jays a handful of minutes ago. 0-0, Top 1... and the ESPN Gamecast Projected Winner is White Sox with a whopping 59%. So far, so good. 6:32PM - Beanie Wells to the Cardinals. Very cool pick. Already fascinated by what his contributions to that offense could be. 6:34PM - The Steelers take that DT from Mizzou (Ziggy Hood) whose highlights* are just incredible. "Best name in the draft," Ryan decrees. * - highlights primarily against Northwestern and Illinois 6:35PM - The Lions draft safety Louis Delmas from Western Michigan (we've got a local boy!) with the first pick in the 2nd round. "Another chance to a make a big splash and they just fail," Ryan says. "That's all Millen ever did with the wide receivers, and it never ever worked!" I respond. "But it got them tons of media exposure!" Ryan fires back. Touche. 6:41PM - "I forgot that Brian Leonard was the Rams' second string running back," Ryan says. "So, who is that?" I ask. "All I know is that he's white and that's what makes it funny." Tou-che. 6:43PM - After the classic Coors Light Jim Mora commercial, this round of commercials pulls a solid back-to-back with the immaculate Patrick Chewing spot. It never stops being funny. 6:47PM - Brian Robiskie (WR, Ohio State) to the Browns! This means it's physically impossible for the Bears to draft him with their second round pick. The football gods are smiling upon us today, my friends. I've also really started to lean on the idea that Jerry isn't going to take a WR with the pick. We're less than ten spots away, and very few safeties have come off the board. You've gotta think if some of the marquee guys are still there, the Bears will have to at least think about addressing that position firs. 6:54PM - Sox-Jays tied 2-2 in the Bottom of the 2nd, but the PW has gone down to 58%. A 1% loss?! Man. 6:57PM - Should have mentioned, the 2nd round (and the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th... and 7th) features a scaled up betting system where each pick, you can guess offense or defense, double down with what "core" of the unit you're talking about (i.e. LBs, DBs, OLs), then you can specify position, then, finally, player. ex: Defense, Linebacker, Middle Linebacker, Rey Maualaga or just: Offense Basically, the more you bet, the more you have a chance to win (high stakes), but if you miss any part of the bet, it voids the entire thing. This whole concept should do nothing but make the awesome draft more awesome. So, yeah, I think I'm gonna go gamble. I guess I'll come back if anything funny happens. 7:08PM - Oh wait! I totally forgot the Bears are picking semi-soon... I'll stick around at least until then. 7:45PM - ...and by "stick around," I mean, "leave the live blog until they're on the clock." Apparently, they're picking at 49 and not 45. This explains why it took forever.7:47PM - Annnnnd Jerry trades the pick to Seattle! 7:47PM - It's weird to spend so much time thinking about something that doesn't even end up happening. In that regard, the NFL Draft is a lot like lost love. 7:48PM - Still awaiting deets on the Seattle trade. Truth be told, the ignorant fan in me was hoping the Bears would take Derrick Williams. This is because I am stupid. 7:51PM - We'll have a busy day tomorrow as the Bears nabbed 3rd and 4th round picks from Seattle. Not thinking into it too hard, I have to say I approve of this trade. All the prospects are kind of running together at this point, you're lacking picks from the Cutler trade, so why not load up for the next two rounds? 8:11PM - It's come to my attention the Bears do not have a pick until tomorrow. It almost makes me feel like liveblogging Rounds 1 and 2 on a "Chicago sports blog." was a pretty big waste. So that sucked. 8:13PM - Sox are up big with a 99% to win and the Hawks have already gotten started, so I think I'll be calling this now. Hope everybody enjoyed the first round. If you were a Bears fan, it was hard to get mad about much of anything. |

The only player who hasn't cried is DHB due to the only tears aloud on draft day are tears of joy
Is he related to Moses Moreno?
Who do we feel most sorry for in this DHB Raiders debacle? Crabtree? Raiders fans? ...DHB himself?
Terrible pick by the Colts. Linebackers galore sitting there and nothing.
Pats snag a Chinaman, this was just a pub stunt have 1billion more fans and money considerations with that
Stompy, stopped watching exactly where you did. By far the highlight of the first day was Cleveland selecting Alex Mack for the sheer reason that between the five people that I watched the draft, we could tell you the girls' fictional character story.
On a second note, Steve Young was absolutely horrid ad-libbing. I understand that sometimes you aren't going to have exactly what you want in front of you but you need to come up with something better than he did when the Broncos made their pick at 18. I cannot even restate what he had to say for the sole reason that it took, no joke, 45 seconds from his first word, to get apart the point that McDaniels needed to set the tone the HIS way, and that he failed to do it by taking that OLB from Tenn.
Great article, I think you covered everything there. . . I would say freelancing is quite hard especially if you are not used to working on your own, can be quite hard to motivate yourself also. . . we all know what it is like to stare at the monitor.
