Favoritism In The Final Four

by Bobby Loesch on March 30 at 10:15AM

Rickhouse praises VDN?! It happened here.
(Ed. note: SlowBreaker column.)
(Ed. note 2: Awesome! Because a) there were not enough refs to contain the fighting hockeymen, b) the Canucks are probably going to be the Hawks' first round playoff opponent, and c) they played Sunday Bloody Sunday during a fight in a hockey game on a Sunday.Well done by everyone involved.)

One of my favorite things to do when the professional or college sport of the moment has its post-season field narrowed to four -- especially when I don't have a team invested -- is to come up with a list ranking my least favorite to favorite based on stupid and arbitrary biases. It's really great.

Since more than one people author this amazing website, I feel like my own perspective could be a little limited, so I'll sum up Ricky and Beau's rooting interest here:spartysign.jpgDone and done.

With that said, I think it's really important to point out that, from my perspective, none of these four teams winning would be a bad thing. As I stated during our first open thread, there really aren't too many teams worth hating in the field this year. Though I did sort of find myself rooting against Oklahoma -- I have no idea why, though. (Side note: After watching that highlight, isn't it kind of crazy how the without-a-doubt-best-college-basketball-player can go from dominating a game to basically sitting at home watching the Final Four just because his supporting cast sucks? Just doesn't seem fair.)

Aright, let's cut the shit and start the pit.

4) Villanova (3-seed): I can't really explain why I like them the least of the four. Maybe it's because I feel like they're the least deserving? It's possible. Even still, they have a lot of things to love.

novanation.jpg- Head coach Jay Wright is pretty attractive.
- The Scottie Reynolds coast-to-coast.
- Strength and conditioning coach Lon Record's extensive offical team bio.

I also love how 'Nova Nation' had the sense to include Alaska but inexpicably and blatantly left out Hawaii. Bonus FU points for having a "TM" in the general vicinity of where Hawaii would be. Colt Brennan is not pleased.

3) Michigan State (2-seed): I swear I'm not hating.

Since I started following college basketball with regularity, I've always had a great appreciation for the MSU program. Izzo's always cool (his pre-game speech CBS showed yesterday about Mateen Cleaves was unreal). This year, I've really taken a liking to Goran Suton. He seems like he'd be fun to party with. Hell, just look at the top four pictures when you google his name...
sutongoogle.jpg
I have no idea how the UCLA chick made it in there, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to give Suton the credit. He deserves it. The dude had one hell of an Elite 8 game against LAWVILLE, too.

Still, I can't help think about Drew Naymick. I feel like he deserved an NCAA title as much as anyone else, and seeing him gone makes me want to pull for MSU a little less.

2) UNC (1-seed): Any other year, these guys would probably be No. 1 on my list, but second's not too bad, either.

I like UNC because Ty Lawson makes college basketball seem legitimate, because Jordan went there (yes, I'm still holding onto that), because you have to choose sides between them and Duke, because I may be one of the only four non-UNC fans who actually likes Tyler Hansbrough, and because Roy Williams gave a funny interview on TV one time.

Truth be told, I just can't stop thinking about this:
hansbroughmuppet.jpgUPDATE: Haha, and this.

1) UConn (1-seed): Rooting for a 1-seed?! I know, I know. But I'll give you 1.6 million reasons to root UConn.

In that interview, Calhoun was brash, frank, and ruthless. Was he kind of a dick? Yeah. Were some of his facts about revenue a little off because he probably confused net and gross? Uh huh. But this kind of blunt and reckless honesty is something the world needs in 2009. I mean, he railed that reporter. Just great.

uconn.jpgBonus points:
- Hasheem Thabeet might be soft as hell, but he's too goofy to root against. And what a life story.
- Would I take any money to root for a team besides UCONN? Not a dime!
-
Calhoun getting sick before the start of the tournament and missing the first game.
- The alleged UConn recruiting scandal which led Jason Whitlock to write: "This is like a woman busting her husband because she heard he got a lap dance at a strip club," my friend said. "The whole time the husband is laughing to himself thinking about all the housewives in the neighborhood he's slept with."
- JackO's hatred of UConn could make for some good B.S. Report fodder.
- People who disagree? Well, to quote Jim Calhoun, "my best advice to you: to shut up."

In all and absolute honesty, I would have really liked to see Syracuse get here (1:30 mark... just golden).

* * *

And some bonus Chicago links if you made it this far
- Dave Dameshek riffs on Chicago jerseys (best and worst... I enjoyed the worst a lot more, probably because Cade McNown was made fun of)
- TF at Fanhouse covers the Cubs day/night game issue (it's actually sort of interesting).

UPDATE: Some 'Hawks fight that everyone's talkin' about.

Just a couple things:

1) I was very pleased to see a) Pitt lose and b) Louisville lose.

2) That line from the Whitlock article is an instant classic.

3) Nice work on this.

Hey Bobby, your post is hilarious. I’m not happy to see these teams in the Final Four, they totally ruined my bracket, and it would have been neat to have 3 Big East Teams in it. One thing you’ll notice, each team has great coaches (Michigan State – Tom Izzo, North Carolina – Roy Williams, Villanova – Jay Wright, and UCONN – Jim Calhoun).

There weren’t any major Cinderella teams this year, which really makes it a lot more interesting to root for when you have no affinity to any of the teams that are left. You might like this Top Ten NCAA Final Four Upsets: http://www.toptentopten.com/topten/ncaa+final+four+upsets

For the record:

4. Nova - Bradwell's favorite team. He hasn't written shit for this site yet so they're last by default.

3. UCONN - Rode Okafor and Gordon to a bunch of money in high school.

2. UNC - MJ.

1. MSU - Lots of good times in EL.

MSU #1...MAD respect Ricky, great times......And as for UCONN- I'll see you in Motown
