RIP Stormin' Norman (and Johnny Red, too)

by Ricky O'Donnell on February 26 at 3:47PM

The Bulls have little meaningful history from the pre-MJ days, but the two guys that stand out to me are Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier. We saw Kerr get honored in a fabulous ceremony earlier this season; I'm sure Van Lier is next now. Norm Van Lier, dead at age 61. RIP.

UPDATE

(Ugh, that intro is straight up eerie now)

Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier on the same day...kind of surreal.

I think I read somewhere in a Blog-a-Bull thread earlier that TNT mentioned Norm's passing and Barkley and Kenny Smith just sat there, presumably because they didn't know who he was (again, I didn't see the segment so I could be wrong here). I'm sure that angers some, but I'm cool with it. Kerr and Stormin' Norman weren't national figures, rather Chicago icons. When I think about the 90's Bulls, I remember the whole package (Jack Haley, Tex Winter, Ray Clay, SportsChannel, ect.), and Kerr and Van Lier were certainly a big part of it.

I'm watching SportsCenter now as I type this and they just mentioned the passings. It's nice that this will get some national attention, but nobody outside of Chicago will really care. In a way, I think that's how I prefer it.

Some would say the pre-MJ days were better than the post-MJ days:

During their inaugural season (1966–67), the Bulls compiled a 33–48 record under coach Johnny "Red" Kerr and reached the playoffs. This was the best record achieved by an NBA expansion team in its first year of play, a feat which earned Kerr the NBA Coach of the Year Award. Dick Motta replaced Kerr in 1969, and under his leadership, the Bulls appeared in the playoffs every year from 1970 to 1975. The team reached the Western Conference Finals in 1974 and 1975, but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors, respectively. Key players during the Motta era included Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, Chet Walker, Norm Van Lier, and Tom Boerwinkle.[6]

how awesome is his hair in that first picture....legit

Yeah, but he wasn't comparing post-MJ and pre-MJ; he was comparing pre-MJ and MJ. And pre-MJ era vs. MJ era isn't even a question of what was better.

RIP, Norm. I had no idea how young he was.

The Sox have Hawk, the Cubs Carey/Santo, the Bulls had Norm. Where's the Bears crazy/lovable former athlete announcer?

Oh God. Red Kerr just died.

Where's the Bears crazy/lovable former athlete announcer?

Every NFL game is nationally televised. I think that's where the disparity comes in.

The Cubs had Carey/Brickhouse ... Santo a distant third.

Actually, he was making it sound like nothing important happened before MJ, whereas I was pointing out that more important things happened then than now. Don’t slight the founding fathers of the franchise, without them the Bulls might not be in Chicago.

uh shut up i was not doing that.

"The Bulls have little meaningful history from the pre-MJ days"

"he was comparing pre-MJ and MJ"

Explain to me how that is correct. Then, explain to me how that's comparing one thing to another. It's a pretty straight forward comment.

I said they have little (not zero)meaningful history pre-MJ because they didn't win any titles or produce any truly great players. I also pointed out that Kerr and Norm were probably the two guys who meant the most to the franchise, and that was before Kerr passed. I don't know if you're retarded or something, but nothing about this post belittles anything Kerr or Norm ever did. I'm not slighting anyone. You are a fucking idiot.

If you wanna debate basketball, I'll debate basketball. But if you're going to be an asshole, please go home.

It’s becoming quite clear how minute your knowledge base is when it comes to the history of the Chicago Bulls and basketball as a whole. I read what you write sometimes and literally shutter at the thought of my son potentially reading something you might write in the newspaper (or whatever media medium they have) in the future. Start writing better posts (at all 8,000 of your sites) and you wouldn’t have to deal with people giving you shit. It becomes part of the job when you write like a douchebag. Produce some well thought out basketball posts and we’ll have a nice debate, crank out some bad stuff and I’ll become an asshole. I’m a cretin like that.

If you are going to make a statement, make the correct statement. It’s factually incorrect to say the Chicago Bulls have little meaningful ‘pre-MJ’ history. Let BobbyStompy take care of the Bulls stuff.

I know lots about Bulls history - Bob Love, Jerry Sloan, Artis Gilmore, and whatnot. Just because I decided to make this post concise instead of rambling about how much tougher men were 30 years ago like you did doesn't mean I'm ignorant to the franchise's history. But if you're ranking Chicago sports teams by their past, the Bulls probably only rank ahead of the White Sox. That list would probably go something like 1) Bears, 2) Hawks, 3) Cubs, 4) Bulls (excluding the MJ years), 5) Sox, right? That's all I'm sayin' brah, settle the fuck down.

And it's funny that you're bashing my extensive resume: what, do you think I do all that other shit for free? I started this site about two years ago, and it has led to some sweet paying gigs. If people are going to give me money to do this, I'm not going to turn it down.

I think in every single one of our little spats, you've gotten the last word, so this time I am not giving you that satisfaction. I probably shouldn't have started this little war of words about two years ago, but sometimes 19-year old kids do dumb shit. Guilty as charged. But I would hope a 30-year old dude who apparently has a child on the way wouldn't be as stupid, because you have single-handidly kept this going.

And please let this be the end of it. Trading barbs back and forth like this makes both us of look like morons. I just can't let you get the last the word in, for once.

Hey is that Norm's mail order wife?
