All hail H-O-R-S-Eby Ricky O'Donnell on February 5 at 1:52PM
I couldn't catch the Bulls game yesterday because of good ole' night class, so someone help me out here: is there anything we can take away from a win over a Hornets' team without Chris Paul, Mo Pete, and Tyson Chandler? Sure, I'll take a road victory anyway I can get it, especially since the playoff picture is starting to HEAT UP in the East (and I mean that as sarcastically as possible) with the Bulls just a game behind the....Bucks and Nets for the eight seed. But wins like this one just seem so uninspiring. The first thing I noticed perusing the box score is that Tyrus and Noah both came to play, which has Matt delighted over at Blog-a-Bull. For Tyrus, it was his fourth double-double in the last five games. For Noah, it was maybe his best game of the season (16 and 9 on 7-of-9 shooting), though the performance he clocked in against Yao a night before is probably more telling than what he can do against Hilton Armstrong. I'm just glad to see Tyrus log some consistent minutes finally (over 30 in four of his last five), though I'd prefer more taking it to the hole and dunking on people's faces and less 17-foot pull up jumpers. But hey, they're going in somewhat regularly now, so that's good. And anytime we're talking about the Bulls, the Hornets, and Tyrus Thomas, I may as well post my all-time favorite Tyrus YouTube vid, taken from his rookie season. Red Kerr's reaction is very....Red Kerr-ish, but I'd like to see what Stacy King could do that bad boy. * Now, more importantly: HORSE in the NBA All-Star game? Seriously? When I first read that I was positive it was a joke. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it'll be totally sweet, but just realize that the only reason it's happening is because Simmons has been pushing the idea for ages. And the NBA actually took him up on it. I'm sorry, but that's sort of mind blowing. Next thing you know the baseball Hall-of-Fame will be shaped like a pyramid. Oh, and here's what the court is supposed to look like (from Ball Don't Lie): |

The Bulls are now at the point where Noah and TT can play with and beat average frontcourts in the NBA. They still struggle with anything above that but they do seem to be improving. Let me say that again, they BOTH seem to be improving.
TT still drives me crazy, as do his fans, because he thinks diving across the lane to try to block a shot is a good idea when it just leaves his guy open for the putback on the shots he doesn't block. Besides that, he actually seems to finally know what to do out there when it comes to running the plays. Sometimes he still gets Jalen Rose-ish (walking down the court) but it's becoming less frequent. I think he knows he's playing for a contract.
As for Noah, i'd like to see a pic of him the first game of the season and a pic of him today. His arms/shoulders have grown, as they should have. Sadly, it's taken this long to do so but it is improvement. He was owned by Yao the other night but what are you going to do? Actually, it helped me gain a little respect for TT because he played Yao as tough as someone could play a guy with nearly a foot height advantage. Noah has no moves on the offensive end except for the occasional layup/dunk when he slides to the hoop on a pick/roll.
Speaking of that, against the Rockets with under a minute to go Rose and TT ran a pick and roll where TT slid to the bucket and Rose was left with 2 guys on him. Rose just threw it up towards the front of the rim and TT rose up and dunked it....just like Amare and Nash used to do it, albeit with less force. That actually made me smile even though they were losing.
I'm skeptical about Horse. In theory it should be awesome, but I just don't think it will be that entertainment.
This game of horse will never end. These guys are in the NBA. With nobody in there face they can hit 85-95% of their shots from 30 feet on in. Unless Shaq, Ben Wallace, Brian WIlliams and Deng compete, this event is going to go on for days. Gilbert Arenas bet DeShawn Stevenson he could make more ONE-HANDED three-pointers than DSteve... and did, with like 80/100.
