Florida Wins BCS Title, 24-14; Tebow Enters Favre Zoneby Bobby Stompy on January 9 at 12:36AM
Notice how I didn't say national title? It's because I fully endorse a split title. With the sluggish/ugh-ish pace and style of that game, it was anything but decisive. I hope the AP votes Utah No. 1, but I don't see it happening.Meanwhile, everyone's favorite QB1 accounted for 300+ yards but was woofing it up to the point where he actually got a (GASP!) unsportsmanlike conduct call toward the end of the game. Not our Timmy!!! This needs to be said: the dude's overrated -- which I find impossibly difficult to happen because he is undeniably good, yet, it somehow has happened. Tonight, his arm was mediocre at best. Can he run with the rock? Sure. Is he a "leader" (whatever that means)? Begrudgingly, yes. Beyond that, I don't get how tonight's performance cemented him as one of the best quarterbacks ever. Tebow's offense is basically like an honors system Wildcat package. It's run first, and anything you happen to get out of the passing game is a plus. I bring this up because of the "controversy" of the Oklahoma DB calling out Tebow and saying he might only be the fourth best QB in the Big 12. Predictably, the announcers said how foolish of a statement that was, but is it really? Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm going to assert here and now that Harrell, McCoy, and, of course, Sam Bradford are all unquestionably better passers. The announcers also said something about how Tebow's 2 INTs helped fire up the team, or something along those lines. That statement was tailor-made for Brett Favre. I was almost waiting for them to say something like: Tebow doesn't throw interceptions, he fires up the defense by forcing them back onto the field! Real quick intervention: 1) Fox had this unbelievably stupid graphic where it had the OU logo with a counter going up to time how long it took for their "fast paced no huddle" to go from one snap to the next, only most of the time, Oklahoma was doing audibles galore, so the whole graphic was pointless as the second counter was hitting 20 and sometimes 30 before the snap even happened. I just wanted to be the first person to make fun of that before I (hopefully) see a lot of bashing/laughing going on tomorrow. 2) One of the greatest NFL coaches ever was at the game. 3) While the game itself was deceptively bad, there were plenty of good highlights... from injuries to touchdowns to impressive interceptions. 4) Just to clear things up, Tebow is not dating British pin up model Lucy Pinder. Anyway, it should go without saying that Tebow's missionary work was mentioned. Now I don't want to open up any sort of issue here, but just one thing: why does being religious make you a good person? I'm sure plenty of college players -- from religious to not -- do volunteer work, but it's like Tebow is the only one who ever gets the credit. Snippy snip snip. Whatever... Enjoy the title real Florida fans. RIP, Sam Bradford. I still say Percy Harvin is soft. Urban Meyer is incredible. Bob Stoops looks funny a lot. Eat shit, Shanoff. UPDATE: I'm not crazy, read this. |

Ha, I was just gonna post something but no need to cover this up. I'm going to Florida this week for a 3-on-3 basketball tournament (not really), Stompy's got this place next week. Feel free to update as much or as little as you want. Doesn't matter to me.
As for this post...I don't know, dude. I've always liked Tebow (mostly because I've always sort of liked Florida, though that goes back to the Steve Superior days before I realized how impossibly unbearable SEC football is) but this column by Pat Forde (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=3812762&sportCat=ncf) cemented it. Tebow rules. The difference between him and Favre, at least from afar, is that Tebow actually seems genuine while #4 has become a running parody of himself the last ten years. I don't know, I just feel like Tebow is...real? I'm not even sure that makes sense, but whatever. Also, I should point out that I don't really like college football that much and barely followed it this year. So maybe my opinion shouldn't count. That being said, I am all aboard the Tebow the bandwagon. As a college football player, the man is legit. Sure, maybe Meyer should get more credit than anyone, but we'll only find that out once Tebow is gone, I think.
I wrote something last year on here (http://www.tremendousupsidepotential.com/2007/12/how_will_tebow_fair_in_the_nfl.php) about how I thought Tebow could probably make it as an NFL passer, but after what I saw tonight, I'm fairly certain he can't. And he's totally, absolutely, definitely, no where near a first round pick. Bradwell, on the other hand, is awesome. He was putting the ball on the money all night. I'm not 100 percent positive he'll be a great NFL quarterback if he comes out this year - only because underclassman QBs tend to struggle at first in the NFL and we all know no quarterback gets a very long leash - but he throws about as nice a ball as I've seen from pretty much any college QB.
I'm not a big fan of Tebow's. Not for any particular reason, I'm just not. But I can see where all of the attention comes from.
He is a good looking kid, has his head on straight, is religious (goes big with the old school train of thought), and he plays for a good team. He has a Heisman and a BCS Title to go on his resume to boot.
I don't know that he is overrated for a college player, but maybe he is a bit over-glorified...see Thom Brennamen.
Not to mention, last night was his first career two INT game. That is pretty impressive.
