Trade of the month: Novemberby Ricky O'Donnell on November 4 at 12:48AM
So maybe I'm not the most qualified person to fix the Bulls at this point. Because of work and night classes, I haven't actually watched a full game yet this season. I've caught bits and pieces, as well as kept up on my daily Blog-a-Bull and Ball Don't Lie reading though, and, by all accounts, this Bulls team does indeed need fixing. There are still too many guards, too many guys playing out of position, and very little depth in the front court. I'm also not sure if the Bulls have a second gun at this point. Derrick Rose is by far and away the best player on the team; no one else has looked like a keeper yet. We know Luol Deng will be around for a while, but he's been useless outside of a strong opening night revenge effort against Skiles, Boylan and Milwaukee. So every month, we're going to try to propose a trade to help better shape this Bulls roster. Consider it our ode to Sam Smith. Since trade season got underway officially yesterday, today is a perfect time to debut it. This first trade isn't really a biggie, but I think it is definitely fair. I also think most of you will hate it, but whatever. Go nuts in the comments, kids. Bulls get C Eddy Curry G Mardy Collins Knicks get G Larry Hughes That's right: Eddy Curry. This isn't a trade that will turn around the season or anything, it's more of a garbage-for-garbage swap. Still, I think it could work. Why the Bulls do it There are too many guards on this roster to keep everyone happy once Hughes comes back. Though Thabo may be the least offensively skilled guard I've ever seen, at least he knows his role is to be a defensive stopper and keep out of Rose's way. I'm not sure Hughes is so smart. That makes Hughes the fifth guard in a primarily three guard rotation. He's shouldn't ever get any PT now with Thabo ahead of him. So why not swap Hughes for Curry, who is stringing together some quality DNP - Coach's Decision's for D'Antoni in New York? Say what you will about Curry (and I'm sure you will: he's fat, slow, lazy, impossible to motivate, ect.), but I think he's way better than Aaron Gray. That's what this trade would be about, cleaning up the guard glut and upgrading the fourth big. Gray is averaging about 14 minutes a game now, wouldn't it make a difference to get someone better in there when Tyrus, Noah or Gooden need a breather? We know Curry can score inside, and that the Bulls haven't had anyone who can since he left. Sure it's all he can do, but his clear and mysterious rebounding problems won't be so disastrous when he's playing so little. I also think Rose would have a calming effect on Curry. Having someone else from the city on the team takes a little pressure off of him to be a hometown savior, which I'm sure he felt big time during his first stint here. I also think handing Curry over to a players coach like Del Negro would benefit him when compared to a Facist like Skiles. As for that pesky heart problem which still has yet to manifest itself, the Bulls may as well go with the Ivan Drago philosophy of "If he dies, he dies." Why the Knicks do it Curry will never play a minute for Mike D'Antoni. He is the complete opposite of what a running team looks for in a big man. I'm sure they'd love to get rid of him. While we know Hughes sucks, his reputation league-wide is probably better than Curry's. We know the Knicks could use a swing man, too. Unless Q-Rich gets hot from behind the ark, like he did on Sunday, he's even worse than Hughes, probably. Hughes would, at worst, give the Knicks a reliable bench guy to back up 1-3. That's pretty valuable in the NBA. * So that's what I got this time, the ultimate junk for junk swap. I do think it would make the Bulls a little better, though. Direct all hatred below. |

Oh boy. I laughed out loud at that. It's funny you used that quote... I was down in Champaign this weekend at U of I, and there was a note of a potential shooting threat found on the floor of some bathroom sometime before Halloween. Anyways, I kept trying to convince my friends to go hang out there anyway, with little success. When I finally convinced a few of them, it was using that quote, only replacing "he" with "we."
Ricky, I like it. Brilliant. Bring back Eddy Curry. The guy can score in the post, something that is sorely lacking on this Bulls team. Can't see the Bulls every admitting that he isn't two steps away from heart failure though. And as far as Larry Hughes being stupid, he's a Rhodes scholar compared to Tyrus Thomas (don't know if you say the 20 foot high oop lob he threw to um, Ben Gordon).
