Marvelous Monday

by Bobby Stompy on November 4 at 4:20AM

monday.jpgNot to bury Rickhouse's likely polarizing Bulls trade post (hit that mutha up), but we can't let what happened yesterday be forgotten until we add some context

Case of the Mondays? Not on this one.

We had:
- The resignation of Phillip Fulmer, one of the most hated coaches -- inside and outside of Tennessee -- resigns as the Volunteers head coach. Yet, somehow, Clay Travis manages to humanize ol' Phil right before anyone can take satisfaction in the overthrow of his regime. So torn.

- The blockbuster Iverson/Billups trade which, obviously, is huge, but at the same time, it felt a little hollow. As a Bulls fan, I recognize the implications, and it intrigues me to see what will happen to the Pistons because of it. Still, I feel the whole thing was missing something. Was it because it came out of nowhere? Is it because we're not at the trade deadline, so no one's in that mode yet? Is it because so many superstars (Shaq, J-Kidd, etc.) were involved with trades last season? Were people just biding their time to Monday Night Football? Probably a combo of all those things.

- The Bill Simmons Friday column axing staying relatively hush-hush and unresolved. And ESPN's lameduck statement settled nothing.

- Brady Quinn being set free!

- Texas Tech giving us the best 'gate' ever: Bikinigate!

- Byron Leftwich outperforming McCain and Obama on MNF. Really? Really.

- The Blackhawks beating the Avlanche, 6-2. If this was the mid-90's, I might just demand a finals appearance for the Hawks right now... and that's worst-case.

- The Bulls not getting embarassed, despite the fact they probably should have, in Orlando.

- And, without a doubt, the most incredible story national or local of Marvelous Monday November 3rd 2008: the entire city of Chicago waits with baited breath on a Kyle Orton MRI. If Bears fans in 2005 could somehow time travel access today's headline, the shock of knowing Orton was still the on the team -- and an apparently a starter still -- might have been too much for them to handle. Times they are a changin'.

* * *

So where do we go from here? Get out and vote! Or, you know, don't.

(h/t: Deadspin for a solid portion of those stories)

"He...could....go...all...the...way...to the White House!"

- McCain

That was, without a doubt, the low point of modern American politics.
