Your proverbial weekend wrap-up

Bears

You'll read everywhere that yesterday's win against the Rams was nothing special and that it does not cure all the Bears' troubles. That may be true, but all I know is that the Bears needed that win yesterday in the worst way. After all the awfulness that occurred last week in Green Bay, they needed to beat up on a bad Rams team, and that is precisely what happened. Was it a great win? No, but it was at least a convincing one they can build off of next week in Minnesota.

Before all that though, we can focus on Green Bay v. New Orleans tonight. Can the Pack join the Bears and Vikings at 6-5 atop the NFC North? The Bears also play the Saints in Week 14, so this game is double interesting.

Back to the Bears for a second, though: how great it Matt Forte? He's the best offensive player the Bears have had since....Marcus Robinson? Especially after having to sit through Benson and Peterson last year, Forte has really been a breathe of fresh air. He also looks like he could become the first Bears player ever to become a perennial first round pick in fantasy football. For some reason, I find that very satisfying.

White Sox

Whoo, Dayan Viciedo! I have no idea if he'll be good or not - I sort of having a sneaking feeling that he'll suck (you don't walk off the island...), but I thought the same about Alexei last year and Viciedo certainly has a much higher profile - but this was a great, great signing by the Sox. Wouldn't you rather spend $11 million on a guy with super high upside (tup, even?) than for two years of Juan Uribe? Last year after the Swisher trade, the Sox probably had the worst farm system in all of baseball. Now you can add Viciedo to Gordon Beckham and Aaron Poreda atop the Sox's prospect list. Good stuff.

It seems that Viciedo will likely be a 1B not a 3B, and because he's so young (nothing like a fresh 19-year old, right?), I don't think we can count on him to contribue next year (though you never know). I like Josh Fields more than most people, but after hearing that the Red Sox are all about Mark Teixeira, what about trading for Mike Lowell? He would seem to be the perfect stop gap until Viciedo is ready. I thought I was a genius when I thought of that, but Sox Machine pointed out Ken Rosenthal mentioned it yesterday.

Bulls

If the Bulls were going to win a second game on the Circus Trip, it probably would have happened last night in Denver. I didn't see the game, but BaB is doing some hardcore bitching about the crunchtime lineup, which apparently consisted of Hunter, Rose, Gordon, Nocioni, and Gooden, which sucks but at least it doesn't involve the names Larry Hughes or Aaron Gray.

Also: there is no reason Noah should ever play under 20 minutes (nine boards in 19 minutes!). And don't even get me started on Tyrus only getting four minutes.

Utah - everyone's favorite - tonight, which will almost certainly be a loss considering the Bulls have a tendency to get thrashed on the back end of back-to-backs.

Other things

- Mad props to my guys at Sportspros(e) on their first ever Deadspin link.

- I'm not sure how long this is lasting for, but The Killers have their whole new album streaming on their myspace. I gave it a listen once through yesterday, and can at least say that the rest of cd is better than the first single, Human, which I think is grade A garbage. The Killers aren't one of my favorite bands or anything, but they're one of the only popular contemporary rock bands that are at least decent (throw The Strokes in there too), so I guess I'm sort of rooting for them.

- This was a sweet concert weekend in Chicago. Alk Trio on Thursday, Margot and Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday. I couldn't make it out to Margot (or any of those shows actually), but my friends that went said it was awesome. Watch this vid of them on Conan recently. The backpack piano deserves your time.

And since I never posted it before, here's a video from The Get Up Kids first reunion show last Sunday.

Margot was a really good show. I was surprised you weren't there. Did you have work?

Margot is, without a doubt, the only good thing ever to come out of Indiana.

Nah I went to another concert with some friends from school.

I've been wondering for about a week how all the Noah and TT fans were reacting now that they've found out that those two do indeed suck. How many coaches need to bench those guys before you realize that? Neither of them have the skills to be consistent contributors in the NBA and if that wasn't evident to you before, it should be now.

I've kinda soured on Tyrus a little but I think he can still be a solid contributor. Noah is pretty good already and definitely needs to play more, but he'd be helped out by a power forward that could actually score.

Wow, your loyalty knows no bounds.

"Noah is pretty good already"

Compared to what? The dude couldn't even make it through a quarter without getting gassed. He admitted that he doesn't know the plays or the defenses. Come on.

I guess we're opposites then. I remember you writing something like "I'm not even sure if I want Eric Gordon on IU next year" after the Hoosiers lost in the NCAA tourney (hey, he could have made it three scholarship players!). I believe you said something similar about D-Lee after the Cubbies choked it away in Arizona a couple seasons ago as well.

The point is, if you're going to invest such high draft picks in these guys, don't you want to make 100 percent sure what you have in them, especially when you're not going to complete for anything meaningful anyways? Tyrus is still super young, Noah is only in his second season. Neither has received consistent minutes since coming to Chicago, and both have been pretty good sporadically. Noah is by far the Bulls most consistent rebounder and interior defender, Tyrus isn't consistent in anything, but, again, I'm not ready to write him off as a total and complete bust just yet. You can argue they haven't earned consistent minutes, but when the time is going to Noce (playing out of position) or Gray instead, is it really doing the franchise much good long term?

I am glad to see the tears you shed of the Cubs have finally dried up though. Hating Tyrus Thomas is so much more productive.

You really dug deep into your bag of tricks to come up with that Cubs stuff. Difficult to do.

I'm not even sure what the point is of your first paragraph? That I turn on players who aren't producing? You are 100% correct, sir. That's not a Cubs fan thing, that's a common sense thing. Actually, it's one of the great things about the Sox GM.

The point is, they already know what they have with those two guys. Noah has admitted to not knowing the offensive and defensive sets and it's not a rare occurance to see TT bringing up the rear as the other team flies down for another easy lay-in. Neither of them has an offensive game, no matter how much time TT spends at the Thorpe Academy shooting jumpers. These guys need to help themselves out by playing correctly before the Bulls need to help them out any more than they already have.

The reason why they aren't getting minutes is because the Bulls feel like they can make the playoffs in the EC with Rose leading the way. They've moved on without TT and Noah being focal points, that's why they are looking at Kamen. You should move on as well because it just looks like you are all over the sack of Matt.

It's better than being all over the sack of some guy named 'Buck Rampage'.

In all seriousness though, I'm glad we're friends again. It's been too long.

Larry Hughes still sucks...

Wear it Utah! Derrick Rose is my favorite basketball player by far right now. He carried them tonight and even though he didn't hit the game winner he wisely shot the ball early in case of a miss. I also love how if someone scores on him he gets pissed and has to score right back.
