All Orton, all the time

by Ricky O'Donnell on October 21 at 2:46PM

I’m going to have to disagree with our two esteemed Bears beat writers this morning: don’t give Kyle Orton a phat contract extension quite yet. If Orton continues to play well, and it costs the Bears more money after the season, so be it. How many times in sports have we seen someone get their contract extended in the middle of the season only to fall on their face immediately afterward? Isaiah Thomas comes to mind.

The point is that if Orton continues kicking ass, the Bears will sign him. After not having a good quarterback for so long (ie: ever), there is no chance they would let him slip away in free agency. I know we’re talking about the notoriously cheap McCaskey family here, but still. Just wait until this season is over, if Orton still deserves the money, pay him. I don’t care when it counts against the cap, just be sure that the investment is sound.

Even if the Bears did want to extend Orton right now (the deadline to do so is Nov. 3), how much would he get paid? Brad Biggs has an idea:

How about between Derek Anderson and Tony Romo? Dunn's agency did Anderson's three-year, $24 million contract with Cleveland. Romo pulled down a six-year, $67.5 million deal from Dallas. It's money the Bears have been waiting to pay. There can't be a team that has spent less on the position in the last eight seasons.

Anderson's situation is almost identical. Both parties will probably want an extra year or two added on, but a base salary of $8 million seem fair.

Just don't do it yet. After all, Orton's has sort of only had three good games. Check out his game log:

The Bears owe it to themselves to make sure he's legit before paying him, right?

Arin is been leading all season, but Condor and I are catching up. Clearly, the real loser of this crew is my fantasy bro Matt. Not only is he in second to last place, but the Bears are, and I feel confident saying this, not a disaster.
