2007 Bears draft class: early leader for worst ever?

by Ricky O'Donnell on August 29 at 7:39PM

Hey what's up. Maybe it's because the baseball teams are beating so much ass this year, but it's kind of hard to believe that the Bears start things for real on Sunday when they'll get fucking killed by the Colts. Still, I think it's pretty safe to say that the Bears are the favorite team of TUP, so this whole week will all Bears-NFL posts. I'll post NFL season predictions Thursday morning, so if you want yours on the site, email them to me. In case you're jonesin' for basebal, here's this week White Sox Report.

When the Bears offense is breaking the NFL record for most consecutive 3-and-outs this season, you may ask yourself, how did we get here? Sure, wasted first round draft picks on Rex Grossman and Cedric Benson had a lot to do with it, but the biggest culprit may be the 2007 draft class. Outside of first round tight end Greg Olsen- who, let's be honest, hasn't really done too much yet even though everyone loves him (especially me, cause I'm obligated to support any athlete with a TUP link on their Wikipedia page)- the Bears may not find another contributor out of the nine players they drafted that year.

This week forever cemented the Class of 07's historically crappy status when second round pick Dan Bazuin and third round pick Michael Okwo were cut without ever playing a game, after both missed the season with injuries last year. For a team that almost always blows their first pick, the Bears have to make second and third round selections count. It's where they have found guys like Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs, and Mike Brown. Maybe blowing a second and third rounder so epicly wouldn't be a big deal for some teams, but the Bears need those guys.

At the time, the Okwo pick was understandable. The Bears needed a linebacker in case Briggs made good on his offseason bitching. They simply blew the pick. But drafting Buzuin, a defensive end, in the second round (62 overall) was just plain stupid. The Bears already had two veteren d-ends locked up in big money contracts (O-Gun, Alex Brown), and just watched Mark Anderson have an awesome rookie year. Defensive end was the Bears strongest postion heading into the 07 draft, and they still took one in the second round. If they had went, say, for an offensive player in that sitation, maybe things would be a little better now.

The Bears will have two starters from the 07 class against the Colts, fifth round pick Kevin Payne (who might be real good) and fourth rounder Josh Beekman. If those two guys can be solid starters, and Olsen develops the way everyone expects, maybe 07 wasn't so bad by Bears standards. But that still doesn't change the fact that they cut a second and third round pick without ever seeing them play in a real game. Only the Bears....

TUP College Football Report

To add to what Stompy wrote on the post below

First, let's figure out which teams TUP really supports/hates. We've got Michigan State, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan are tier one, Mizzou (Stompy), Miami Ohio (Dubs), Clemson (Barnes?) are tier two. I think we can all agree that anyone in the Pac-10 can suck a fattie (even though Rey Maualuga is pretty sweet....). We may as well throw Notre Dame in the Hate section as well, because I think all you guys loathe them as much the Cubs. I might be the only person in the world without strong feelings on ND one way or another, but I'll go with the consensus on them for the purposes of this segment.

So yeah, rough week for TUP football, as was noted earlier. Michigan State lost a tough one to Cal (those refs were terrible, right?), Illinois played alright but really never came close to stopping Mizzou's juggaunaut O, and Michigan is going to be in for a really, really long season. I wouldn't take too much away from the Hawkeyes 46-3 blowout of Maine either, as Jake Christianson is still their quarterback, and he's a loser becaues his dad held him back a year in grade school so he'd be better at sports (at least that's what I've been told).

I want to get this on record: Ohio State is winning the National Championship this year. There, I said it.
