Dark Knight thoughts

Guest post from Dubs coming later today

So I saw Dark Knight in IMAX tonight and was not disappointed. It really did live up to the hype, and was equal to if not great than Batman Begins, which is an astounding feat in itself. But I want to talk about what is going to happen in the sequel to the Dark Knight. If you’ve seen the movie already (DON'T READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET), let’s get into what could happen in the franchise’s next installment after the jump. Everyone will be saying that the latest two Batman movies are good enough to stand on their own without a third movie. The more I think about it, the less sure I am that is true. The Dark Knight was phenomenal, but it was so clearly the second act in the three part story. The Joker was still supposed to be the central villain in the sequel, but Heath Ledger’s death means the character will almost certainly have little to no role. They couldn’t possibly recast the character (some people are saying they should let Daniel Day Lewis do it) after Ledger turned in such an iconic performance. Instead, the story has to adjust, something that is totally unfortunate but there is no way around it. Well, there is one way around it, I suppose: though all the major characters are signed for the next movie, director Christopher Nolan isn’t. If Nolan can’t think of a logical direction to take the third movie, which could happen with Ledger’s death, I wouldn’t be totally shocked if he walked away.

Still, the thing that makes these Batman movies so much better than all the previous ones is because there is actually a story arc. In the Michael Keaton, Kilmer, and Clooney editions, the movies serve completely independently. These two new Batman films have a clear story arc, and I think it would be a crime to stop with how this one ended, even if the Joker can’t be a character.

So what happens next? I guess the first question should be this: is Harvey Dent still alive? Driving home with three other people we were split two and two on whether Two Face will be around in the next film. I was originally positive he was dead, and I believe that when the movie was finished shooting, he was supposed to be dead. But Ledger’s death may have changed everything, and I now think Two Face will probably be back in the next film. His fate after he and Batman fall to the ground is so murky, and I bet Nolan made it that way so that if he does decide to do the third film, he has something to work with.

I have three predictions for the sequel: Scarecrow will play a central role, The Riddler will be introduced, and Batman will be revealed to be Bruce Wayne to the public. One major unresolved development is that one Wayne Enterprise employee knows Batman’s identity. He never gets to reveal it on television as planned in the Dark Knight because of the Joker, but that’s still a big deal going forward. I think that theme reappears.

So what do you guys think? What’s this third movie going to be about?

Ok, I've decided they need to recast Joker. It sucks, I know, but the story is always more important than the actors. Ledger was great as the Joker in large part because the script is so good- you can't sacrifice the story just because the actor isn't there anymore.

Say Bale somehow can't portray Batman in the next film because of something tragic. I'd be totally be with them recasting him as well. The point is that everyone knows the only reason Ledger isn't the Joker in the next film is because he's dead, but i now think that Nolan has to stick with his original vision for the trilogy regardless. If they want the third film to be good, and still on target, the Joker needs to be a part of it. The ending of the Dark Knight sets up an epic confrontation between Batman and Joker, and that still has to go down regardless is of the actors.

A little inside information......Ledger is not really dead, he faked his death in order to make the third installment "2-Pacish" in its nature. Just wait.

I saw the flick last night as well at the IMAX and I will have to say it was sweet. It was wierd wanting to see more and more Joker as the movie progressed...pencil trick, fucking sick. Possibly the best introduction of any antagonist ever(?)

For the future, it would just suck to see anyone other than ledger as the Joker. Sure it could be done, but do I really want that to happen? Not really. His character was sick. You will be thinking about ledger the whole time instead of what the new guy is doing and it will never live up.

I hope they let Harvey die. I like Eckhart usually (ie Thank You for Smoking) but he does not command the screen like ledger did and should not be the main villian in the next Batman movie. Riddler? Or will they bring in the ladies? Maybe it is time for a chick to become the next bad "guy"(?) Anywho, it was sick...enjoy my post today and check out TTCS for my Top Ten Events Mrs. Dubs and I Would Like to See at Wrigley

Recasting the Joker would suck, but i really think it's necessary.

Was this the first 'jump' in the history of TUP?

See, I'm undecided about them making a third. I don't think you can top that film and villian. Nolan is the only director to get the whole Batman thing right (Burton was on the right track though), so if he walks and they make another one, it'll be shit.
Recast Joker? That'd be like Cormac McCarthy writing a sequel to No Country and then recasting Bardem - Ledger's performace was that good, and really unsettling.
A third film just wouldn't stand up to this one.

First of all having seen the movie twice (and loving it) I have to say that I believe Dent is dead (they had a funeral, and I loved his performance and I think he commanded the movie the last half in all of his scences. His scenes were the most tense because he was getting revenge over something and threatening normal civilians and cops rather than random people.)

You can't recast the Joker, you just can't.

I would prefer they bring in an unknown villian (much like Scarecrow in Batman Begins) to the movie crowd for a new story. There are tons of other batman haters so pick one of them.

One other interesting thing could be having Jim Gordon somehow involved in the evil sense he is seemlessly the only other "good guy" other than Bruce Wayne.

One other tangent, does anyone else find Christian Bale's Batman voice to be kind of annoying? And why does he use his Batman voice around Lucious when Lucious knows he's Bruce Wayne?

I think everyone finds the Batman voice annoying (though it doesn't really bother me anymore). Some of my friends didn't even like Batman Begins because of it.

But....you HAVE to bring back the Joker. If Ledger doesn't die, the third movie is obviously the final, epic throw down between Batman and Joker. That's the story. Regardless of what happened to the actors, you still have to follow the story. This trilogy has a clear arc (someone compared it to Star Wars with DK being Empire Strikes Back, perfect analogy), and there is even that one line where Joker goes "me and you are destined to do this for a long time" or something like that. I loved Ledger's preformance as much as anyone, but seriously, you have to stick with the story. I'm sure any number of awesome actors would love to honor Heath by completing the role, the way it was meant to. Introducing a new villain with a huge role would just seem forced and tacky to me and that's not how this awesome, awesome trilogy should end. Like I said, the story is bigger than any of the actors. I think it has to go on regardless.

I completely agree with Ricky that the movie is bigger than any actor. Look, there has been what, 4 different batmans? and I personally think all of them did a great job, though some better than others. A well done story with good acting can capture the attention of any viewer no matter what the actor's name is in real life. When we watch the movie we just have to get over the fact that its someone new. Whether is is a new joker, two-face, or the riddler as the villain, a new batman story will always intrigue me. Some past stories may be better than others but batman must continue. Another thing, I'm getting tired of hearing people say how they hate Bale as batman, especially because of his voice. He may not fit as well as he did in American Psycho but he is a badass. And his voice; all batmans have to disguise their voice and the only way is to lower it.

Oh yeah, and vote for Chicago on ESPN's search for titletown USA

Have a new villain, mention of the joker, and how he got beat up to death in between the 2nd and 3rd by police forces. The movie may be bigger than the actors, but not this actor. You can't recast the major scene stealer in the Dark Knight. Jump to 5 years in the future after Dent's "death" and have something horrible happen to Gotham. At the end of DK, everyone hates batman; so make something happen to Gotham where Batman may be needed - Mr. Freeze, I presume?

How do you guys know its a trilogy? and just wondering are they going to bring robin or batgirl? As for bad guys theres always penguin, mr freeze, riddler, and well a lot more. And what about cat women?

So, I personally hope this isn't -just- a trilogy. I know it's really difficult to keep something as epic as this going, but I personally would love like... 5 movies. Because let's face it, there are so many places you could take Batman, especially when you look at the Comics. However, it will probably be a trilogy, in which case as JT up there mentioned, something really bad could happen to Gotham. There's always 'No-Man's Land' where a giant earthquake destroys Gotham and the head of Arkham lets all the looneys loose.
