July 2008 ArchiveGriffey roundup and Lollapalooza top tenby Ricky O'Donnell on July 31 at 5:04PM
- Oh hey, it’s me.
- Mike Clark of SportsPros(e) writes that maybe, just maybe, Griffey can still be the home run champ. - Ugh, I always say I hate Mike Downey, and this column enforced those thoughts yet again. Downey confusingly says he’s stoked for Griffey’s arrival. At least I think he did. Really, none of it makes any sense. Looks like somebody has been watching the X-Games a little too much lately. - Who would thought, Mariotti plays the NOT GOOD ENOUGH card. I can’t believe it. Best part: A plan-another-parade trade, this is not. If the Sox truly were gunning for another championship, they would have thought bigger, bolder and younger -- and also would have addressed their pitching, defense and speed issues. In failing to land Huston Street or another reliever, Williams leaves the Sox scarily vulnerable in the bullpen. Has there ever been a local columnist with such a distaste for a hometown team? ‘Insufferable douche’ isn’t even the tip of the iceberg with Jay. Needless to say, nothing would be more enjoyable than to see the Sox stick it to Jay for the second time in four years. Unlike Mariotti, I won’t completely write it off. - Jeeves was following the story from the start. He’s pumped for the end of Nick Massett, but can’t be happy about Kenny Williams’ declaration that Griffey is going to play center field. - Sox Machine hammers home how dumb it would be to put Griffey in center every day. *** Since I'll be at Lollapalooza all weekend, after the jump are videos of the top ten bands I'm most excited to see. Ken Griffey Jr. to White Sox??!by Bobby Loesch on July 31 at 8:43AM
Note to self: take out the exclamation points and question marks laterThis could be our first chance to scoop FanHouse and ESPN, so I have to take it. Apparently, a deal to send the coolest player of the 90s to...
Floyd schools Livanby Ricky O'Donnell on July 31 at 12:02AM
Ah, just as I predicted.Gavin gets a bad rap on some prominent Sox blogs, and particularly from a few guys at South Side Sox. One dude made a google spreadsheet outlining what the Sox should like look for the next...
The easy part is over: Bulls resign Dengby Ricky O'Donnell on July 30 at 12:01AM
I wonder if John Paxson shopped Luol Deng around the league at all. There is no question that Deng’s stock was higher both within the organization and league-wide following last season, but my dreams of putting together a package of...
30% of people are moronsby Ricky O'Donnell on July 29 at 12:03AM
I wrote on Full Court Press last week about the public’s strange reaction to Urlacher’s contract situation. Basically, I said that if the team has left over money, there is nothing wrong with giving it to a guy who...
Guest Essay: A good year for the eliteby Friends of the Program on July 24 at 12:51PM
Quickly: Carlos Quentin, man, myth, or mystery? You decide. If the Sox win the division, and Q! keeps doing his thing, Quentin is without a doubt the MVP of the AL. And as I've stated all along, the Sox are...

First, the superstar:The six-time Pro Bowl linebacker signed a one-year extension earlier in the day and the deal is reportedly worth $18 million. It includes a $6 million signing bonus, a $1 million raise in base salary from 2008 through...
Woman and A-ROD, Dumb Alikeby Friends of the Program on July 22 at 10:30AM
BY DUBS With Ricky not in, work has become exponentially agonizing. I find myself actually doing some, which is not in my daily routine until about 4:30pm when I rush to get all my shit done for the day. Fuck...
Dark Knight thoughtsby Ricky O'Donnell on July 22 at 3:43AM
Guest post from Dubs coming later todaySo I saw Dark Knight in IMAX tonight and was not disappointed. It really did live up to the hype, and was equal to if not great than Batman Begins, which is an astounding...
A week awayby Ricky O'Donnell on July 21 at 12:14AM
I'm covering for Roman on Full Court Press this week, so be sure to go over there and check it out. I already wrote a post on the Hawks, which always feels weird saying, particularly in July. Expect a lot...
Quick Chicago roundupby Ricky O'Donnell on July 18 at 10:53AM
I was going to make this a White Sox second half predictions post, but I may as well save that for Beachwood on Monday…- Even though I know Stompy has professed his love for Tayshaun Prince before, I think everyone...
Bears sign Kevin Jonesby Ricky O'Donnell on July 17 at 12:58AM
If nothing else, the signing of Kevin Jones means one thing: Adrian Peterson won’t be getting meaningful carries this year. The NFL has become a two-back league, and that formula is certainly what the Bears are staring at this year...
Mocking Rick Morrissey, FJM-styleby Ricky O'Donnell on July 15 at 3:08AM
In all my years of blogging, I have yet to give a column the FJM treatment. But with a slow period of Chicago sports upon us (All-Star Game: meh), I feel the time is right.Upset alert: it’s not Mariotti. There...
Beachwood column upby Ricky O'Donnell on July 14 at 3:35AM
read it if you'd like. ***Even though it means ESPN will talk about nothing but Brett Favre for the next four days, baseball's All-Star break should be welcomed by everyone involved- including the fans. As I wrote on Beachwood, the...
7-9 Sox recap: Sox 7, Royals 6by Ricky O'Donnell on July 10 at 12:38PM
I’m not sure if last night’s game says more about the Sox or Royals. For the second consecutive game the Sox played horrible- the starting pitcher struggled to get through a bad Royals lineup and the offense was lifeless until...
An ode to The Reign Manby Ricky O'Donnell on July 10 at 12:28AM
You know how Simmons always makes that joke about how he’s one of 26 people that still enjoys the NBA? Is that true? Cause I love the NBA- not just the Bulls- and it seems a lot of my friends/acquaintances...
Cubs get Rich Harden; all Chicago World Series inches closerby Ricky O'Donnell on July 9 at 12:45AM
We all know Rich Harden is injury prone. He’s been on the DL nine times already at age 26. He’s also seen his velocity drop a little this year. That isn’t good for his long term future as a player....
OMG: Hawks and Wings New Years Day at Wrigley!!1!by Ricky O'Donnell on July 8 at 12:01AM
Maybe it’s because I’m positive the Bears are going to suck and it’s inevitable that Derrick Rose won’t start becoming, well, Derrick Rose, until midway through year two, but for the first time in my life, I am fairly pumped...

JD Got Screwedby Bobby Loesch on July 7 at 2:27AM
I was at a wedding over the weekend, so I've been out of the sports loop for a couple days, so after watching my two favorite tennis players lose in the finals at Wimbledon on back-to-back days, fighting off David...
Either way, this Brett Favre business will likely end gloriouslyby Ricky O'Donnell on July 3 at 4:03PM
I'm not sure if anyone can concentrate on football the day Megan Fox becomes single, but here goes it. For blogs, this is just as momentous as the day Jay Bruce was called up or that one time Erin Andrews...
The Final Questionby Bobby Loesch on July 2 at 9:22PM
With tonight possibly being C.C. Sabathia's last game as a Cleveland Indian verse the White Sox, I wanted to raise an issue that's pretty much always been on my mind since I saw C.C. for the first time: Does he...
Derrick Rose is fastby Ricky O'Donnell on July 2 at 2:13PM
So two months ago, Derrick Rose got a speeding ticket for going 105 MPH on a local highway. Today, Jay Williams jokes will be made far and wide, but not on this site because those jokes are unoriginal and lame....
A special guest post by Dubsby Friends of the Program on July 2 at 1:33AM
From yesterday: "No more of this Dwayne Wise crap." See people, though I'm smarter than John Paxson, that really isn't saying much. Whatever, I like being wrong if it leads to White Sox victories, as it did last night. I'm...
Take your time coming back, Paulieby Ricky O'Donnell on July 1 at 1:44AM
