Royally Uninvolved... and Really Enjoying It

The Sox game last night was pretty weird. I mean, it ended on a 15th inning walk-off, but it was the Royals, you know? The Sox offense had exploded the night before, and the game wasn't exactly must-win, so fans were expecting all that much.

The Sox took a 4-2 lead into the top of the 9th, but Bobby Jenks blew the save to send it to extras, 4-4. Thing is, when Jenks blew it, people didn't really seem all that mad. It rained on and off throughout extras, so there was sort of a football game-vibe to it, but it let up toward the end. When Konerko hit the walk-off, it seemed like a pleasant surprise more than anything else. But hey, as always, a win's a win.

3 Other Thoughts:

- I totally forgot how different it is to watch a baseball game from the outfield. Last Sox game I attended was on the third base line, and when you're there, you really can't mess around. You pretty much have to watch every pitch to make sure you don't get hit in the face. In the outfield, you look at the scoreboard, see a 3-2 count after seeing a 1-0 count seemingly five seconds before. The commercial breaks also go a lot faster, I think. The pace of the game in the outfield is just night and day compared to other seats in the stadium.

- The crowd (obviously) began to file out as the weather got worse and the game went on, but it got especially bad in the 12th and 13th in terms of fan involvement in the game. Fortunately, the Sox did a 14th inning stretch, and it fired up everyone in my section. Just about everybody remained on their feet for the rest of the game.

- Some guy got off his cell to announce the Cubs' winning streak was over. People were ecstatic. The entire section was high fiving and cheering. Is that pathetic? You tell me, I can't talk about the rivalry with an ounce of objectivity.

So here's where the Sox stand in the AL Central (as of June 5th, 2008, Noon):
1) White Sox (32-26) --
2) Twins (31-28) 1.5 GB
3) Indians (27-32) 5.5 GB
4) Tigers (24-35) 8.5 GB
5) Royals (23-36) 9.5 GB

I knew the Twins were nipping at the Sox's heels, but I had no idea how bad the Indians and Tigers were doing. Obviously both of them are still in the thick of things because the Sox haven't exactly separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Still, if someone hypothetically showed me these standings on opening day, I probably would have said, "I'll take that."

* * * * *

As for NBA Finals rooting interests...

I spent most of this season not minding the Celtics -- of course, this is after they lost their 11th regular season game and I popped champagne (I am lame). But I really, really hate it when teams can't win on the road, so I've spent most of these playoffs rooting against them. The whole C's hating started to fall apart when my dream finals (Spurs-Pistons) got destroyed with extreme prejudice. I also don't really mind L.A.

If you're a Bulls fan, you have decent rationales to root for both teams.

For the Lakers... you could play the Phil Jackson card
For the Celtics... you could play the "I don't want Kobe threatening MJ's legacy" card

Both are pretty legit. Still, if you're a Illinois person, how can you say you're rooting against KG? Or, as Ricky touched on below, how could you possibly root against P.J. Brown? Doc Rivers be damned.

I think I'm going for the Celtics, but I wouldn't be all-that-upset if the Lakers won... especially if they crushed Boston. There'd be some humor in that.

One other thing: don't forget the Celtics have home court advantage in this series. I know it's a moot point if the Lakers take Game 1 or Game 2 on the road, but just remember this when and if the series heads back to Boston for Game 6 and/or Game 7. It'd odd to have the road team be the Vegas favorite, but whatever.

As for predictions? Let's go with.... Lakers in 6.

UPDATE (12:24PM): I just realized Ricky and I have the exact same prediction. Wow, I bring nothing to the table.

To answer your question...ues it is sad that Sox fans need the Cubs to lose to have a good day. It makes no diff what the Sox do for Cubs fans...pathetic

As i said in a previous post, I do actually pull for the Cubbies.....but when they're doing th well, I love to see them lose.

A cubs loss doesn't make it a good day, it just makes the day better. We like to see the people who think we are pathetic unhappy.

He didn't say that at all. Nice job twisting his words and making generalizations.

first of all Dubs, Cubs fans dislike the White Sox and Sox fans and this became more apparent after we won a title. Don't go sitting on your high horse thinking that it doesn't go both ways.

Stompy, I also once made it through a 15 inning game against the Twins and sang the 14th inning stretch. Good times

We do not hate the Sox at all...we look down upon jealous Sox fans who have nothing better to do than complain about the Cubs getting more attention and then themselves go find out if the Cubs lost...The majority of the city (or Cubs fans) simply don't care what the Sox do.

Jealous? Most Sox fans don't crave attention or a giant national following. We don't need millions of others to like the same thing as we do just to make sure it's cool or trendy. Your typical pompous attitude is why most Sox fans dislike the Cubs.

While this has nothing to do with stompys post, and I can't believe I am defending Zach, but how can Sox fans say they are not jealous. The reason I say this is because Sox fans live and breathe Ozzie. He can do no wrong. (Try and tell me otherwise) But earlier this season it was Ozzie who was trying to rally the troops by saying that the city is slanted towards the Northside and that it's not fair. So how, as a Sox fan, can you not say you have a feeling of jealousy when the ring leader of all Sox fans, Ozzie, sounds a bit jealous himself?

Sorry that last post was from me

Ok....part of being a Sox fan is hating the Cubs. Everyone gets that; that is how it is. I completely agree with SP on how the perception of Cubs fans changed against the Sox after the title.

I have to approve the comments for the Sun-Times blog, and any time the topic is about the Sox, Cubs fans say how shitty the team is and how Ozzie is an idiot. Case in point: click on my name. It will take you to a FCP post about the Cubs. Read what Rick Beato wrote (and my killer response) at 8:16 PM. Zdubs is wrong.

Also, yeah, I'm sure some Sox fans are jealous of the Cubs. They're a pretty sweet franchise. And by sweet I mean gay, but you get the point.

But seriously, awesome ballpark, the games are pretty much a party. And, this year at least, the team is really good. The Sox just offer baseball. If you like baseball, awesome. If not, the Cubs are kind of cool, I guess.

yeah Zack, and I look down on Cubs fans who ask, "who is this" every time someone walks out of the bullpen. I mean as someone who has been fortunate enough to have season tickets to both franchises and coming from a family that is entirely Cubs fans, I see both sides and can appreciate their differences.

I respect knowledgeable Cubs fans like you and my father, but you have to admit there are a lot of morons that just go to down beers are Casey Moran's after the game as well.

And there are also idiotic Sox fans (cough William Legue cough) but at Sox games you will also find die-hard fans who care as much about the team and baseball as die-hard Cubs fans and could care less about the Cubs and their accomplishments

I've been fortunate enough to attend all of the 2003 Cubs playoff games and being a Sox fan I can still say it was one of the coolest experiences of my life to that point, I still ultimately love and respect the game of baseball and knowing how much you know it surprises me how truly ignorant you are being.

And as far as Ozzie, "rallying the troops" I mean that worked for the Jay Mariotti remarks because everyone hates the guy but I think most people are smart enough to realize that Ozzie has gone off the deep end...

There are fans of the Cubs and then there are people who are looking to have a good time or to see a historical stadium...I don't see why it is bad to have a both. They are not true fans, but out-of-towners who either moved to Chicago or are in town for the weekend...I agree that the people that go to Sox games (about half that are at Cubs games) are usually pretty die hard...but that is also true of about the same (over 20,000 season ticket holders) for the Cubs...there really is no argument either way. The Cubs just sell out thier games and that is why there are 'tard fans as well... thats the only difference really...I hope to see you guys in the World Series...this city would burn down...OUT

no, I mean like I said Z Dubs, I can appreciate both sides of the coin when it comes to taking a game in at Wrigley.
