And…another day with nothing from Pax and the Bulls on who they're drafting. Maybe I’m making too big of a deal out of this, and I just want the pick to be Rose so badly that I’m getting nervous for nothing. But if the Bulls were going to pick Beasley, there’s no way they would let that info out early, right? The fans would want to kill Pax. They'd have to do it as a draft day surprise. Just saying…
** Check out my post at TTCS: top ten things to know about Derrick Rose. Most interesting thing: him and Marcus Jordan are dating twin sisters. At least they were when the immortal Bob Sakamoto wrote this article on Rose in March 2007.
** Other draft thoughts
OJ Mayo = Good Larry Hughes. Before everyone thinks that’s some kind of huge insult, remember that Hughes was a pretty good player there for a while. At least he was before he started taking so many bad shots. I think Mayo will be a good scorer, but not shoot for a particularly high percentage, and play really good defense and get tons of steals. He’ll never be close to Rose or Beasley, but he’s a nice player, maybe a future All-Star. I think he’s clearly the third best player in this draft.
Kevin Love has quickly become my least favorite player in this draft. Sure, he’s extremely skilled, a great passer and good shooter for a power forward. But please note: he’s slow, he’ll never be a good defender, he’s totally arrogant, and he’s undersized. If he was taken around 10-15, sure, that’s cool. But Minnesota is thinking about taking him 3, over Mayo, Westbrook, Stompy’s guy Brooke Lopez, and Jerryd Bayliss. To me, that’s crazy. If Love maxes out his potential, he’ll probably be the fourth or fifth best player on a good team. That's useful, but you don’t use a top five pick on that. Also, I get the sneaky suspicion that everyone only likes him because he’s white, which is totally lame. We need to come up with a name for that group of guys…The Andres Nocioni All-Stars?
If the Bulls were going to stick at number nine, the guy I wanted was Russ Westbrook. I’ve debated his relative worth with Phillips endlessly (mainly if he can play the point), but the more I look at this class, the more sure I am he’s one of it’s five best players. Like Rose, he’s a freak athlete. Put those guys in the right system (you listening Knicks?) and they really can’t fail. Take the ball and run. Westbrook can do that. Even if he never develops a solid jumper, he should be a lockdown defender (especially when you consider he played under Ben Howland). I’d probably take Bayliss over him, but it’s close.
In all my years of watching basketball I have never seen two players as similar as Eric Gordon and Ben Gordon. Seriously, they’re the exact same guy. Via the Chad Ford/Simmons debate yesterday:
He has no handle. He's undersized.
Guess what kids, he can’t play any defense either. Eric may be a tad thicker, but Ben is really strong too. These are the exact same players: undersized two guards who can average 20 points a night, but won’t do much else.
Players I like: Kosta Koufos, Mario Chalmers, Eric Gordon (for what he is- a scorer), DeAndre Jordan, Darrell Arthur, Anthony Randolph (uppppside), Nicolas Batum, and the Shawn Kemp of the Congo, Serge Ibaka.
Guys I don’t like: DJ Augustin, Love, JaVale McGee, Donte Green, CDR, Roy Hibbert (a cooler version of Aaron Gray), DJ White.
I have no idea: Joe Alexander, Danillo Gallinari, Marreese Speights
Something that sucks: there might only be two guys taken in the first round that are older than me.
Rose is not only the best player in the draft, but actually the best overall person. I subliminally keep trying to doubt every "good" story about Rose. It's time to kick my minds' ass; Rose is a good human-being. Paxson can do no wrong by selecting this golden child. I am officially addicted to DRose worse than Josh Hamilton and Shawn Kemp were ever addicted to any drug. While were on the comparisons with Kemp, Serge's highlight reel reminds me of a foreign exchange student coming into the talentless state of Wyoming and playing against Cheyenne High School. Just destroying the 6' 1" post players Wyoming has to offer. I don't know if that guy will be that great, but nobodies highlights have ever made one individual look so immortal.
I don't know about that, I always thought he seemed pretty humble. Also, I'm usually a person who is more critical of white players than black players, but I actually do like Kevin Love. I'm not saying he'll be good or bad, but I will be rooting for him. It might be the facial hair... the just wears it with no regard for what anyone else thinks.
Also, though I hate the Lopez Bros., part of me wants Robin to succeed and stick in the league longer than Brook just to stick it to him. But really, I hate them both. But seeing them leave the Pac Ten is nice.
Oh man, now I hate Love even more. Go check out The Boss' latest at Depressed Fan. He leads with this gem:
The more I read about him, the more video I watch, the more I think the best pro to come out of this draft might just be Kevin Love.
Blargh!
Kevin Love will get eaten alive by KG, Amare, Jefferson and Bosh. He has absolutely no chance in hell of holding those guys down. He's not even 6'8! Love was dominant in college because he's so skilled, and there, he isn't undersized and they're few freak athletes. Against good NBA power forwards, you know, guys that aren't fat and generally Earth-bound, all Love will be able to do is chuck up 18-footers and hope they go in. Look what he did against "good" competition, and I put that in quotes because pretty much any NBA big man is light years better than the Lopez's or Ryan Anderson:
3/15 Stanford: 12 points, 6 boards
3/13 Cal: 11 points, 7 boards
He was good for 12 and 9 against Memphis against Joey Dorsey, who won't even be a first round pick.
Athleticism makes a big difference in the NBA. You can get away with superior skill in college, but will make you nothing more than a role player in the NBA.
He has plenty of size to play the 4 in the pros, he's the same height Boozer was in his predraft measurement.
All of his results from the combine were as good as, if not better than, Beasley's.
Saying he has a decent jumper is pretty funny, considering he shot a higher % from 3 than Rose.
He's a highly-skilled big man with great hands, great passing ability, a good touch from the outside, and a track record of success.
Rose is a good athlete and has good size for a point guard. His college numbers were nothing special, he's getting over-hyped because everyone has seen the immediate impact Chris Paul and Williams have had. The only problem is that Paul is faster, Williams is stronger and they both have better jumpers than Rose.
I'm sorry but comparing Rose and Love is laughable. It's like comparing Optimus Prime to the fat kid from The Sandlot. That's not even a fair fight. Get it, because Rose is like some type of super powered machine, and Love is short and fat. I'm sorry Bri, but you can't argue with science.
Also, Brian, since you're here: this is going to sound horrible, but all American born white guys suck at basketball. You know who is probably the best? Kirk Hinrich, and he's terrible, let me tell you. Just look at the American born white guys that have been drafted in the lottery the last few years:
04: Luke Jackson (epic bust), Robert Swift (bust with awesome tats)
05: no one
06: Adam Morrison (epic bust), JJ Redick (ditto)
07: Spencer Hawes (didn't do anything as a rook)
And combine #'s don't really matter. I saw him play a bunch this year, and I feel like he stands no chance against uber-athletic NBA power forwards. Then again I predicted the Bears to win the Super Bowl last year (and i think you predicted the Eagles to do the same!) so maybe I'm wrong about this. But I don't think so.
First off Stompy, Kevin Love IS about as arrogant as it gets and I would know, I spent three days around him last spring.
Also I think Jordan and Randolph will both be busts. They are both likely to be picked in the 20's now because their workouts are so bad.
Westbrook to me is not a point guard nor will he be. I like him as a Barbosa type off the ball, but a better defender, but in no way should he run an offense.
Also Robin will be a better player than Brook, book it.
Also Donte Green and J.J. Hickson are the two most underrated guys in the draft right now. Green will be this year's Thaddeus Young, a great athlete with a ton of talent who got low marks because he wore down in the last couple games last season, but trust me I've seen both of these guys work out and they are freaks!
First of all Dubs, hilarious comment haha. Even though Harangody has the vertical leap of Ron Santo.
Stompy, let's just say that Love felt entitled to everything, complained openly in an all-star game practice, as well as the game because he felt he was above it all. Was a jerk to fans after the game and has been known to repeat the entire process I mentioned quite frequently. Did I mention the guys Dad is known as a lunatic as well.
Finally somebody called out Kevin Love on TV for his "unreal outlet passing" ability. Jalen Rose kind of laughed at that "talent" feeling he probably should have specialized in something else. Have I not been saying this from day-one?? Anyway, Stompy, I do not have quite the exierence Phillips has, but is has been openly annoying about his passing skills, and before the season started he dubbed himself "The best passing forward in the nation." I hope Love is hated wherever he goes.
I think Kevin Love will be like Matt Bullard or Scott Padgett. A big guy that can shoot the rock. Will he be a 20/10 guy? Probably not, but then again, how many of those are there in the league these days?
Kevin Love in the NBA is like the old white guy with RexSpex that played D1 basketball in the late 70's that still tries to play against the twenty somethings at his local Y. Sure his skill are solid and he makes shots, but he simply can't keep up with the pace or the athleticism of the game and ends up killing your team because he tries to check the KG of the Y...
Love did have 1.4 blocks per game and only 1.9 fouls per game. That does indicate that he has some quickness to him on the post. I know the NBA is faster, but with training and development, I'm sure he can handle most of the big men in the league.
How many guys actually checked KG successfully this season?
Well, that is kind of the point...there are a ton of guys who are just as quick, or quicker, than KG and unless he is playing against...I can't even think of a slow PF these days...all the slow guys that he could maybe stick play center and they would totally dominate him because of the size diff...honestly thinking about it K-Love will be fucked worse than Ced Ben in prison...PS do you think Ced will cry for his mom while he is being gang-raped?

I'd say Kaman is the best top-10 white American draft pick in the past 6 years, not Hinrich.
Saying he has no chance at being good because he's a white American seems kind of arbitrary, no? Enjoy the second coming of Jay Williams.

"Kevin Love IS about as arrogant as it gets and I would know, I spent three days around him last spring."
Care to expand on that at all?
It could just be me, but Kevin Love seems like a slightly blacker version of Luke Harangody with slighly whiter skills...
First of all Dubs, hilarious comment haha. Even though Harangody has the vertical leap of Ron Santo.

Rick, I like your point about white Americans, but Adam Morrison is not from America. Sorry G.
I think Kevin Love will be like Matt Bullard or Scott Padgett. A big guy that can shoot the rock. Will he be a 20/10 guy? Probably not, but then again, how many of those are there in the league these days?
I think he'll be better than Bullard or Padgett...but like you said, you'll be a star.
I'll be a star? Thanks!!
Oh, and where is your entry for the contest?!!?!?
I didn't want to take your money haha.
