Reflecting on the Cedric Benson 'Error' (See what I did there?)by Ricky O'Donnell on June 11 at 7:30AM
![]() I think everyone is happy that Cedric Benson is gone. I said on the podcast and on FCP that I didn’t really care if the Bears cut him, but, more than anything, that was just so I wouldn’t have to live with Adrian Peterson getting meaningful carries. Seriously, I hate that guy. He tries hard and whatever, but has zero talent. Let’s just hope Matt Forte is as good as the hype would suggest. Or, as my father suggested, maybe the Bears sign Kevin Jones? Who knows. Both papers did excellent work regarding Benson. The Trib’s David Haugh leads with this amazing anecdote: He wasn't crying because he was overcome with joy or pride. That’s some pretty heavy stuff right there. During that draft, I wanted Mike Williams (yikes) but was sold on Ced eventually after a while. He was just so great, so productive in college. It didn’t seem to be a question of ‘will he be good?’ it was ‘for how long can he be good?’ because of all the carries he accumulated at Texas. The Sun-Times’ Mike Mulligan threw this haymaker: But in a lot of ways, there should be celebration over the closure to the career of the biggest bust in Bears history. Biggest bust in Bears history? Jeez, where to begin? In my lifetime, seemingly all the first round picks have been busts besides for Urlacher. Let’s go through the ones that have happened since I can remember watching football: 07: TE Greg Olsen- Pretty much everyone thinks Olsen is going to be awesome. He wasn’t great as a rookie, but should be the Bears’ best receiver this year. Yeah. Benson is certainly up there. He was drafted higher than Enis (who went five), McNown (who went 12), and DT (seven). So maybe he is. None of those guys were as bad off the field, either. And no one cried on draft day because they thought they would make a few less million dollars. *** Please go check out The Fantasy Factor, a new fantasy sports blog on the Chicago Sun-Times from Matt Olsen and I. It updates three times a day, so go read my morning recap and then check back periodically. Just don't ridicule my poor attempts at humor. These are orders. *** More Benson hate at TTCS. Yeah, I had no fun last night. |

01: WR David Terrell: Buuuuuust. I'm sure Stompy loved this pick as a cool 14-year old, though. I refuse to believe otherwise.
14-year old Stompy adored this pick. It was part of a magical 2000-01 stretch where the Pats took Brady (2000) and the Bears took Terrell and Anthony Thomas (2000).
And you know what, Who says Terrell would have failed everywhere? Seriously, the Bears aren't exactly the right place to foster young WR talent. I know he was a bust, but he showed a few flashes here and there. Ugh, whatever, I hate the Bears drafs.
How does Angelo still have a job or at least the opportunity to draft with a rap sheet like that?
He was busted twice in college. I know its tough, but there is something to be said for drafting a guy who doesn't get caught with weed. I guess my problem with Cedric Benson is that he is a representative of how naturally gifted people often fail in the NFL because they lack work ethic and how poorly managed teams cannot see past it. I want the Bears to win every game except one (whenever they play the colts) and it absolutely kills me when they fill a team that has sported the Paytons and Singletarys and Dents of the world with thuggery. Chicago has the template. All they have to do is find guys who will work as hard as Urlacher. Their squad now is defined by people who won't work. Benson and Grossman. Chicago will respect work ethic if any fanbase will. Chicago has to focus on not taking flashy draft players and taking sure things. Give up the 4.4 for the 4.52. Do speed means very little on the field. Scout better people, pick better workers. What teams in the NFC North has done enough to get out in front of the others? Chicago should be dominating this division.
excuse me, Do speed is a typo. I meant 40 speed
Should be dominating? Sure. I bet they come in last though. I am not optimistic about this season. This offense could be historically bad.
The Raiders and Niners teams of the last few years have pushed the 'historically bad' bar pretty low. In fact, I think we should pretty much etch Art Shell's name into the trophy of 'historically bad' offenses.
PS: Rick, have you heard of that rediculousupside.com blog that got linked on Deadspin? Are we rivals? Can we be???
Yeah it's the new SB Nation NBA Draft blog. I really hope they wanted this name, saw it was taken, and became incredibly disappointed.
But yeah, let's start shit with them. Is anything cooler than a blog fight? The answer: no.
