Last Word On Cubs-Sox Part 1 (And It's Not Even Ours)

by Bobby Stompy on June 24 at 1:44AM

Everybody's familiar with Chuck Garfien, right? You know, the dorkier guy from the Comcast Chicago crew. Not sure who around here reads Comcast's website for news -- I go for the TV schedule and occasionally get hooked into stories -- but Chuck's got a White Sox column up there called the "Sox Drawer," which at first I thought was cutesy and gimmicky but is quietly evolving into a diet version of Simmons (think White not Red).

What's nice is he provides some media perspective to the White Sox that you don't get from other blogs. Dare I call his column a blog? Gasp!

Well anyway, I thought his take on the weekend series was pretty interesting. Not that I agreed with everything he had to say, but it was certainly the best of sparse opinions from the Sox side of things (South Side Sox, I'm looking at you).

Probably my favorite part:

Leaving the park about an hour after A-Ram [Ed- A-Ram?!] hit the game-winner, I was walking on Waveland Avenue with Ryan, one of our producers, when 4 men between the ages of 45 and 55 held a monster Wrigleyville throwdown. We’re talking some serious haymakers here. After about 20 seconds (which for a fight is an eternity), Wrigley security stepped in and stopped the Geritol brawl.

But this wasn’t 2 Cubs fans fighting 2 Sox fans. Or even 3 Cubs fans brawling with 1 Sox fan. No, this was 4 Cubs fans fighting each other!

That’s right, not more than 60 minutes after the Cubs biggest, most dramatic win of the season...at a time when they should be sharing Cubbie warm fuzzies...these 4 guys (all wearing Cubs t-shirts) were sharing fists literally 50 feet from Wrigley…over who knows what.

Still undecided on him? To push you toward respect: He graduated from USC. To push you toward disrespect: I went to a Blackhawks game over winter break and he missed one of those intermission hockey shots and was booed by the crowd

But seriously, let's leave Sox-Cubs Round 1 where it belongs: forgotten. After all, it's NBA Draft week, so let's get positive.

I'm missing something here...why would it be a good thing that he went to USC? I'm confused.

But yeah, that's a lot better than I expected. I'll be checking that out fo' sho'.

Garfien and the Comcast voice-over guy both refer to it as Chuck "joining the blog revolution" in the promo spots on CSN. Apparently you can write about sports on the internet now. That's awesome.

I don't understand how anybody can be against USC. There's hot babes, entertaining players, Pete Carrol's unbridled enthusiasm, the beautiful SoCal weather. It's everything college never was for 95% of people.

I can buy that argument, I just don't you've ever mentioned that before. So do you like all the Florida schools as well, because they also possess most of those characteristics?

My only problem with USC is Bush. When everyone was fawning over him during the 2005 Draft, I never thought he'd be anything special in the pros (though I think he's the best college player I've ever seen). Plus, I have Mario Williams' AIM screen name, so I was pumped when he went #1.

No, the Florida schools don't have the Hollywood/glam element that California does.

I thought Williams was the right pick then, too.

Still, factor in this...
- Carroll faked LenDale White's suicide to loosen up his team

- He had his team watch 'Talledga Nights,' and... well, just watch the first 10 seconds of this video: http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/081106aac.html

- Their band played the "Snakes On A Plane" theme song, and then Tommy Trojan stabbed a huge human snake on the field (after four years of shitty 80's music at Iowa, the USC band seems like the Beatles by comparison)

- Do I even need to bring up the song girls? (http://eppsnet.com/images/usc-song-girls.jpg)
