Saturday's Are For Rock: Death Cab for Cutieby Ricky O'Donnell on May 24 at 2:11AM
I think I forgot Death Cab existed for like two years. Then I stumbled across the video for the first single off their new album, and I remembered how much I loved them. I’ve been listening to the last three cds ever since. While reading up on their new album, Narrow Stairs, I found this review by a dude from mtv.com on their wikipedia page: MTV writer James Montgomery said that although "Death Cab for Cutie had gone insane," he also believes that it could make "an early contender for the best album of 2008." He also said that "Narrow Stairs is a great album, one that could make them very famous, but could very well also kill their careers." Really, I couldn’t disagree more. If you like Photo Album, Transatlaticism, and Plans, you’ll like Narrow Stairs. It isn't anything radically different then what you always get from Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla. It's really good. Gibbard is one of my favorite song writers ever, and definitely one of the best going right now. Everything he does for Death Cab is great, All-time Quarterback was cool, and the one Postal Service album was awesome. Narrow Stairs is sort of a change in pace from Plans: it’s slightly more uptempo and every song isn't about dying. There is a little less piano, and a little more rock on this one too. Of course, that’s never a bad thing. The one thing I would say is it lacks one great song, though I always think that when I get new cds. While “I Will Possess Your Heart” (the aforementioned single) is good, it’s not as good as Title and Registration, We Laugh Indoors, or Soul Meets Body. Besides for that, the album is really solid. Of the 11 songs, there’s only one I kind of don’t like (Talking Bird). Long Division is probably my favorite track, though the opener, Bixby Canyon Bridge, is pretty awesome too. I Will Possess Your Heart Sound of Settling * Oh yeah, sports. I'm over at the Sun-Times' Full Court Press all weekend, so drop by. Can the White Sox keep it going? You decide! |

i'm a big fan of death cab for cutie. i actually got to take a piss on their tour bus once while i was intoxicated (ON it, not IN it.) i got their new cd and i must admit i don't like it nearly as much as Plans.
This is very similiar to what Seth Cohen wrote on his blog a few days ago.
See, I didn't like Plans that much when I got it, but now I think it's really good. I think this cd might actually be better. But I have no idea. I sort of don't know anything about music.
Transatlanticism, yo.
