Um…okay?
I’m not too sure what to think here. I’m definitely surprised though. I really thought the job would go to one of the 10,000 unproven assistants Paxson has interviewed since D’Antoni took the Knicks offer.
The best part of the deal seems to be that one of the young guys Pax interviewed will be named Collins’ top assistant. At first, that seemed great because since Collins coached MJ 20 years ago, he’s got to be a pretty old guy, right? Only 56. I thought he was for sure in his 60s. So there’s that.
Truthfully, coaching in the NBA is overrated. You just need someone who won’t screw it up. A coach has to tighten the rotation (play eight guys not ten), place people in the right positions (ie: Noce at power forward doesn’t work), and try to come up with good bench combos to give a team some energy during a really long NBA season. I’m confident Collins is capable of that. Is it as exciting as hiring D’Antoni? Nope, but last time Collins took the Bulls from point C to point B, and after last year, the Bulls are definitely back to starting at point C again.
Collins didn’t want to coach until the Bulls won the lottery, so hopefully he’ll be ready to connect to the young players like Skiles and Boylan never could. The assistant will have a lot to do with that as well, and now I hope it’s Tyrone Corbin, a former DePaul player and Chicago native.
Maybe the biggest impact Collins will have will be his input into the draft debate. Collins was a point guard from Illinois, so maybe he’ll want another.

Not really. Skiles was just a hard ass. He embarrassed Tyrus in the press all the time. He got the young guys to play D, but if you didn't play D he hated you. Collins will be more understanding...like a wise grandpa.
My biggest problem with this hiring is that they waited this long without interviewing Tom Thibedou and Michael Curry after the Playoffs. It's not like Collins was going anywhere else, so why make this hire right now without interviewing every potential candidate?
Also, coaching in the NBA makes a bigger difference than you think Ricky. There's a reason college coaches never succeed in the NBA.
And Tyrus sucks, get off of him. Yeah he can jump high, awesome, but he sucks!

Rick, If I am not mistaken, wasn't the only thing that Skiles could do was relate to young talents? His problem came when those talents didn't want to listen anymore.
