April 2008 ArchiveWednesday roundup?by Ricky O'Donnell on April 30 at 4:09PM
I'm starting to feel like Shoals now, just linking to all the other stuff I do around the internets instead of cranking out posts here. Really, it kind of makes me feel important.
- Top ten players to watch for the 2009 NFL Draft. I thought this was a brilliant idea when I wrote it Sunday night, but since I didn't post it until today, it seems like everyone beat me to the punch already. About five hours after I finished it I noticed that McShay already had a full 09 Mock out already. - Your AL home runs leader: Carlos Quentin. - Here's the thing that I don't think Buzz Bissinger understands: about half of the written posts on sports blogs are just trying to make people laugh, and roughly 99% of the comments do the same thing. If it's a little mean, so what? "They called Sean Salsbury an assfister! The outrage!". Well, people hate Sean Salsbury. Instead of everyone blandly listing their criticisms of him, commenters on places like Deadspin say things to make everyone else laugh. It's funny. And really, judging by the way Bussinger talked in the segment, is their any doubt that he says this kind of stuff about people (in his case, his peers) all the time? The only difference is he just says it to his friends while the Deadspin commenters post it on the internet under a pseudonym. And if anyone takes that duesch seriously after he tells Leitch he's "full of shit" before Will can even get two words out of his mouth, well, I don't even know what to say. You can see the intro segment at Awful Announcing, but he's the round table video. The other thing: people that read blogs are in the top 1% of the most knowledgeable sports fans. These guys know their shit so well that reading Peter King columns just get too boring after a while. Almost everyone still reads the newspaper, reads Jack McCallum, and everyone else. But blogs are meant for humor purposes, and to give fans of a team a place to talk about them. How could anyone ever say anything bad about South Side Sox or Blog-a-Bull? It's far more intelligent discussion than what you'll find in the Sunday Trib. The their main writers are way better than Mike Downey. It's not like you only read blogs or only read the newspaper. It's both. I read ESPN.com, the Sun-Times, the Trib, Deadspin, and KSK. Also, isn't it strange that the blogger rep comes off as far more well reasoned than the old stodgy journalist? - Finally, check out Brian's alternative names for home runs post. I’m ridiculously busy with school and work this week, so things may or may not be a little light around here for a few days. It doesn’t matter anyways, as I’m sure everyone will just be playing GTA the whole...

Should the Bears trade up?by Ricky O'Donnell on April 22 at 2:38PM
Even with all the praise Rashard Mendenhall gets around here, the Illinois junior running back should be relegated to a backup plan for the Bears at Saturday’s NFL Draft. The Bears most clear need is offensive line help (well, after...
Top Bears draft candidates for pick 14by Ricky O'Donnell on April 21 at 2:02AM
Hooray, draft week! Really, I'm not as pumped as I usually am. Drafting linemen is just so uncool. The Bears should call an audible and draft and rights to Dwight Howard in round seven, by the way. He would have...
Urlacher threatens to retireby Ricky O'Donnell on April 18 at 2:36PM
Only special occasions call for two posts on one day, but I'm not sure this whole Urlacher situation qualifies as such. There's no way he's going to retire, and the Bears aren't going to trade him. Unlike some people commenting...
So goes Boylanby Ricky O'Donnell on April 18 at 5:59AM
It’s almost incomprehensible how much work the Bulls have ahead of them if they are going to get back to being a 50-win team. There are a lot of similarities between the 07 Bears and 07/08 Bulls, but there’s one...

New Beachwood column upby Ricky O'Donnell on April 14 at 2:18PM
Aaaaand here it is. These are easy to write when the Sox keep owning everyone.Since everyone else is giving their MVP vote, we may as well jump in. It all depends how you view the award, I suppose. If it's...

Updated: top 25 NFL prospectsby Ricky O'Donnell on April 11 at 4:15PM
This isn’t a bad draft class, there just isn’t a clear cut, top player like there is in most years. Long, Dorsey, and McFadden are the three best players in some order, and team needs will determine where they get...
Mendenhall visits Bearsby Ricky O'Donnell on April 9 at 4:11PM
One way or another, the Bears have to build a solid running game for next season. Of all the things that went wrong last year, the Bears total inability to move the ball on the ground may have been the...
Final college player evaluationsby Ricky O'Donnell on April 8 at 3:32AM
Shouldn’t I be writing about the NFL Draft instead, with it less than three weeks away? Yeah, probably, but I sort of don’t care as much as I usually do, and SML’s stellar Knicks post yesterday got me all riled...
New Beachwood column upby Ricky O'Donnell on April 7 at 2:03PM
...and you can read it here. It's chalk full of Swish praise and Detroit bashing. Please read. Needless to say, I'm pumped up about the Sox right now. Everything is just going so well. That doesn't mean they'll end up...
Talkin' Sawx (of the White persuasion)by Bobby Loesch on April 7 at 1:05AM

Sox take opener from the Tigers; the Tigers are 0-4by Ricky O'Donnell on April 4 at 4:39PM
Shades of 2006 already in this early White Sox season. Contreras was flat out awful today, especially early on, but the Sox offense was able to get runs when they needed it. A few observations:- Swisher and Quentin have to...

Sox recap: Opening Day, Indians 10, White Sox 8by Ricky O'Donnell on April 1 at 1:49AM
I’d like to do these as much as possible, but it’ll obviously be impossible for me to catch every game. If anyone out there is able to watch a full game and wants to write up a few bullet points...
