I hate when people say that Bernard Berrian sucks, because, you know, Bernard Berrian does not suck. He’s a B+ receiver that was stuck on terrible offenses the past two seasons and was still fairly reliable. Is he worth more money then Lance Briggs, namely $42 million over six years? No probably not, though I would argue that he is worth more then Justin Smith, but that is someone else’s problem, not the Bears'. It’s hard to blame the Bears for letting Berrian walk away with the price tag so high, especially because it let them bring back Briggs (who we’ll get to in a sec), and allows them to rework contracts for Brian Urlacher and Tommie Harris. But I have a feeling the Berrian-is-overrated faction of Bears fans may change their tune next year watching Rex chuck it to Rashied Davis and Mike Haas.
The ‘he’s not a number one’ argument was driving me crazy; there simply aren’t 30 better receivers then Berrian, therefore making him a ‘number one’. This isn’t to say the Bears were wrong to let him walk because, again, Minnesota gave him a lot of money. I just want to point out that Bernard Berrian is good at football and will be missed here. I’m sure somewhere Rex is horrified too, and there is nothing worse then a horrified Rex (I don’t even know what that last sentence means but it makes a lot of sense to me).
My momentary distaste of Jerry Angelo was quickly erased by the resigning of Briggs a few hours later. I really am shocked that he couldn’t find more money elsewhere- for a litany of reasons, but whatever- but this is a great signing for the Bears. Perennial Pro Bowl linebackers aren’t easy to find or replace, especially ones that are 27, and Briggs accepted basically the same deal the Bears offered him after 2005. When you consider how well he’s played the last two seasons it is pretty shocking his value around the league didn’t go up, particularly in a league where Justin Smith gets two sacks and is suddenly handed $45 million (seriously, I can’t get over that).

Oh, I'm not saying I didn't like Berrian -- I did -- but the FOURTH highest paid WR in the game? Unreal.
Um, ok, I agree with that I guess. And Berrian totally got too much money and the Bears shouldn't have matched it. But Berrian is pretty good and it's not like it's easy to acquire Chad Johnson or TO or Moss. The Bears had/have money and I thought they should keep Berrian if other offers were reasonable at all, especially given that there is no one really behind him on the depth chart (though i do think Haas could be good). But like you said, fourth highest paid receiver is just nutz.
Wouldn't that be insane if Moss and Culpepper actually go back to Minnesota

Just because you're in the top 30 at your position doesn't make you a No. 1.
Cleo Lemon was a starter this year. Chris Weinke was a starter this year. I'm sure, at points, they were top 32 players in the NFL. You can be in the Top 30/32 without being a legit No. 1. Look at Wes Welker. He might be a Top 10 WR in this league, but to me, that still doesn't make him a No. 1.
