Even though the Bears may have a shot at Rashard Mendenhall, who I believe is one of the best players in the draft regardless of position (a friend described him as a ‘poor man’s Walter Payton’, and I don’t think he was joking), the Bears number one target in April’s draft should be Boise State junior left tackle Ryan Clady. Bears management apparently realizes this because Lovie Smith was in Idaho Monday to put Clady through a private workout.

Brad Biggs points out what we’ve known all along: there is a very good chance Clady isn’t there at pick 14. Right now NFL Draft Countdown has him being selected fifth overall to Kansas City, though that is the earliest by far most mocks have him going. Angelo has made a lot of smart moves already this offseason, from resigning Briggs to cutting the correct people (but how can you not stick the franchise tag on Berrian?!), and getting a private look at Clady shows the Bears know what there most pressing needs are. Taking Clady would immediately improve two positions at once, as John Tait would slide over to right tackle. Maybe trading up is an option for the Bears for the first time in Angelo’s tenure.

If Clady is off the board, Vanderbilt tackle Chris Williams could be their next target. With good size and agility, Williams has been rising up draft boards lately. Some mocks even have him being selected as early as pick 12 to the Broncos.
