Remember Kenny Williams’ plan for the bullpen going into last season? He basically found as many hard-throwing young guys as he could and stuck them in front of Bobby Jenks. While this was all extremely cool, it simply didn’t work. Here’s a quick recap:

-Aardsma: good for like 10 minutes then sucked.
-MacDougal: sucked surprisingly more then planned.
-Massett: sucked a fat one.
-Sisco: Went down quicker then Heath Ledger at Mary Kate Olsen’s apartment. (Yeah, I reached for it, but come on; I give it a solid B-.)

So I commend Kenny Williams for changing his philosophy this offseason by targeting guys that, you know, have experience, like, pitching well. The bridge to Bobby Jenks- the White Sox best player- is at least twice as strong as last year.

It’s been pointed out that both Linebrink and Dotel aren’t particularly awesome. Fair enough. Sure, Linebrink doesn’t strike out a lot of guys and gives up an occasional home run. Fine. All I know is that I’d rather the ball in his hands in the seventh or eighth inning then in the hands of any of those clowns mentioned above. Linebrink may not be great, but few relievers are.

The Dotel deal I like a lot too because it’s a low risk/high reward move. Look, Dotel gets hurt a lot, everyone knows that. But when he’s healthy, he’s pretty good. And two-years is the perfect length for the 34 year old. When actually playing, Dotel generally strikes out a lot of guys and walks few. If he does that, the Sox will reap significant benefits. If not, who cares, it’s only a two-year contract anyways.

Basically, the Sox bullpen went from one of the worst in baseball to possibly a reasonably dependable one. Ehren Wasserman and Boone Logan both proved that they were alright last season, MacDougal could rebound from an awful 2007, and the setup trio of Linebrink, Dotel, and Matt Thornton seems to have a lot of promise to along with some much needed experience. At the end of it all is Jenks, maybe one of the games five best closers.

Uh oh, I’m starting to get excited about the Sox. This can’t be good.

When I saw that the Sox might sign Dotel I just imagined Williams sitting at the kitchen table at his house saying, "Who is that left that will sign with us?"

I like the Dotel signing better than the Linebrink signing but the Sox have pressing needs elsewhere...and I'm not talking about Bartolo Colon elsewhere, either.
