A 5-8 record may diminish the importance of their final three games, but the Bears certainly still have a lot to play for. While drastic changes are unlikely, the Bears will have to make decisions on certain players that will affect the team’s future. Here is a quick list of what to watch for the rest of this season.
Bernard Berrian’s contract situation
With Lance Briggs’ exit all but a lock, the resigning of Bernard Berrian could be the Bears’ top offseason priority. While he dropped an uncomfortable amount of passes early in the year, Berrian has rebounded to have himself a solid season. After making a name for himself last year, Berrian has undoubtedly become the Bears’ best receiver this season, cathing 64 passes for 883 yards and four touchdowns. The Bears would certainly like to keep him, but the question is how bad. Assuming Randy Moss resigns with the Patriots, Berrian is the best free agent receiver in a class that includes Jerry Porter and Devery Henderson. Berrian turned down an extension last season and is said to be looking for at least $15 million guaranteed. After resigning cornerbacks Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman, the Bears could be hard pressed to find cap space to fit in Berrian. His performance over the final three games could determine if resigning the wide receiver is a possibility.
Is Orton legit?
The Bears have gotten good looks at Rex Grossman and Brian Griese, but Kyle Orton remains a bit of a mystery. It’s hard to judge him on his performance from 2005, when, as a fourth round rookie, he led the Bears to ten consecutive wins, despite having a quarterback rating under 60. Orton’s three game showcase begins tonight against the Vikings, and if he’s successful, he could be a darkhorse for opening game starter next season.
Draft standing
Right now, it looks like the Bears are staring at a draft pick between eight and fifteen. Starting Orton may be a subtle way of tanking to get a better pick. Look for the Bears to target a running back, quarterback, offensive lineman, or safety with their first pick.
