Is Tyrus Thomas lazy?

At least Sam Smith thinks so. Smith suggests today that rookie Joakim Noah may steal minutes, and possibly a starting slot, away from Thomas because of his relentless work ethic, something Smith says Thomas does not have. From today's column in the Tribune:

Though he's a rookie, Noah is older than Thomas and has played in more big games, having won two NCAA titles at Florida. He has had problems with his shoulder, but he's a relentless competitor and has been a willing learner thus far, unlike Thomas.

Noah fits the Bulls' profile of a hard worker who will practice more than he's asked to. Thomas remains the exception. Not surprisingly, he disappointed the Bulls this summer by not working out here.

Players such as Deng, Gordon and Hinrich have to work for everything to be where they are, and they do. Players like Thomas can get there without working hard or even paying much attention. Often he doesn't.

As the immortal Blog-a-Bull (the internet's best Bulls site for information and opinions) pointed out earlier, this isn't the first time Smith has bashed our guy Tyrus.

While I'm one of the few who really liked the Joakim Noah selection- athletic 7-footers don't come around every year, you know- it's unfair to call Tyrus lazy. Sure, it's an easy thing to do when someone is as athletically gifted as Thomas, but that view just seems to be Smith's, and not shared within the organization. The hard evidence certainly doesn't support Smith's claim either, as Tyrus led the Bulls in the Orlando summer camp in scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 pg) and blocks (14 in just three games!).

*I'm starting to get jacked up for Bulls season (Brian Griese probably has a lot to do with this), so expect a preview coming in a few weeks (I don't want to write it too early, just to get it out there), along with NBA power rankings.

I don't think that he's lazy, I just think that he needs to grow up. He's not in high school or college anymore, where his athletic ability was enough to make him a superstar. He now needs to become a great basketball player, and not just a great athlete. I think another year with the intelligent and hard working roster and coaching staff of the Bulls will help him do this.

My only problem with the article is it seems that Sam Smith just hates Tyrus Thomas. By all accounts, he had a great summer, and Smith just seems like he's nitpicking or taking cheap shots when he says "he didn't work out here". Tyrus will probably be the sixth man this year, but he'll push Smith for a starting spot for sure. I think Joe Smith is going to be great, but it's good know we can alternate in Ty and Noah to always been fresh bigs on the floor.

Worst mistake in Bulls draft history was taking Noah, just watch

People who bash Noah are stupid. He's good at everything but scoring, and, as Dave Berri always says, scoring is overrated.

And who else were they going to take? Spencer Hawes? I don't see the Bulls shooting themselves for passing on Hawes.

the answer to this question isn't skin deep.

screw you guys, I'm a die-hard collegiate basketball fan and all I remember is his whining and bitching...and he's one ugly mofo

Anyone who is anti-Noah seems to have trouble saying why without using his looks or expressions off the court.

He's a winner, hard worker, and was the best available player when the Bulls picked. Period.

well since I'm anti-Florida, and there is nothing wrong with stating the fact that he's ugly- the city of Chicago has an image to keep up here, I will always hate Noah which is my right since I know very little about the NBA....Go State

Dave/Rickau,
What do you think about Chicago possibly trading for Kobe?

He's clearly the best player in the league, if there is any chance the Bulls can get him they should. It would 100% change the entire team, first of all because Deng and Gordon would probably be gone (maybe more), and second because Kobe would probably take every shot. I'm sure alot of Bulls fans wouldn't like the idea of giving away all we've built up the last four years for a malcontent like Kobe, but if it's me, i'd do it.

Okay everything Ricky said is right, but I ask myself, would the Bulls be any closer to a championship with Kobe? Kobe has proven he needs help around him to win, and with what the Bulls would have to give away to get him, I just don't know if they win anything. They might be good enough to win the East, but I don't think a championship. And really, that's all that matters.

Fine points there DK, but if the Bulls were to acquire Kobe- which will not happen, by the way- i have complete faith that Pax would be able to get more talent in the years following after the trade. Sure, the Bulls wouldn't be the best team in the league right away, but i think Pax would surround Kobe with more talent then Mitch Kupchak has done with LA. It's not going to happen, and i'm not even sure if i want it to happen, even though i think it's smart baketball wise.

For sure the Bulls aren't getting Kobe, I agree on that much. In the weeks leading up to the draft this summer, Kobe texted Pax inquiring about his interest in a trade. Pax replied "Don't count on it". Indeed, if the trade happened they would get Kobe and probably be a very good team, Kobe is the second best SG of all time and him in the backcourt with Hinrich would be exceptional, but again they would have to start rebuilding around him. They have spent a decade since the breakup of the MJ's dynasty trying to rebuild a team here, and with the acquisition of Kobe they would have to start building all over again. You're right that Paxson would be better at it than Kupchak, but I think the whole process would be in vain. Who's to even say the East would still be that easy to win by the time they assembled a perennial championship team with Kobe? I just don't want Pax to make an all or nothing move that might not work out. The Bulls are good enough right now to win the East, and I'd rather take my chances at that then see them dismantle it for a future with Kobe filled with uncertainty.

Scott Skiles sounds like a racist trying to bait Tyrus Thomas into being the fall guy. Blacks are lazy...where have I heard that one before. Skiles needs a scapegoat and it looks like Thomas is it. How else will he cover up his coaching inadequacies. Now I understand why the players had him kicked out of Phoenix. Scott Skiles/Doug Collins are interchangable. Both are a little crazy. Both are a pain in the rear. Is it me or doe's anyone else notice the resemblance between Skiles and Chris Benoit the wrestler who killed his family and commited suicide?
