I was waiting for this to go official, because I'm not sure how much I can trust Adam Scheffter just yet, but here it is: Brian Griese will start against the Lions on Sunday. I'm a little disappointed because if Grossman were to go down, I wanted it to be with guns blazing. Unfortunately, we're not going to see that. But what we will see on Sunday is a quarterback who will have a QB Rating of higher then 45.2, and a guy who won't make nearly as many mistakes as Rex. If Ron Tuner and the rest of the Bears brain trust were going to keep this game-managing quarterback plan in place, then Griese will be better then Rex.
But the point isn't to be a good team, it's to be a great team. I'm not sure if Brian Griese gives the Bears a chance to win a championship. That's the only thing that should matter, right? Sure the Grease-Man will put the Bears in the playoffs, and I'd be shocked if he didn't tear it up in his couple games, but I'm not sold that he can lead the Bears to all the way . I am glad, however, that Lovie isn't standing for the shit Grossman has been giving him recently. Rex has been terrible, and it's good to see Lovie proactive in trying to make the offense better.
Now the real question becomes, is this it for Rex in a Bears uniform? As everyone knows by now, this is the last year of Grossman's contract. If he doesn't get on the field the rest of the year, it certainly won't be renewed. But remember, Brian Griese isn't the most durable or talented guy in the world. He's never played a full 16-game season and, while he does have a Pro Bowl under his belt, he certainly isn't one of the league's top quarterbacks. Remember, Rex fucking Grossman was starting over him for 22 games, so how great can the guy be?
I envision a scenario where the Grease-Man goes down around week 12. Grossman comes in off the bench and leads a heroic comeback. If that happens, and Griese isn't fully ready to go the following week (let's say he's 80%), I'm fairly positive Lovie would have no hesitation to stick Rex back out there. Maybe at that point, the Bears record will be good enough where the offense can open up a little more, and we finally start seeing some Grossman to Berrian bombs like last year. Maybe it's only a dream, but that's the only way Rex returns to the Bears next season.
Here are two fine odes to the Sex Cannon from KSK. Gone, but never forgotten.
