When building the 2008 White Sox, where do you being? Ozzie Guillen thinks it should be with speed.

''When you have speed, speed is never in a slump unless you get hurt,'' Guillen said.

Guillen’s probably had it with slumps after he saw his entire lineup suffer through one the entire first half. But he’s right, the Sox need to get faster. Right now, they have one of the slowest teams in all of baseball. Thome, Konerko, and Pierzynski might be the slowest threesome in the league, and the rest of the lineup isn’t much better besides for Scott Podsednik. Having bashers in the middle of the lineup is fine, but the Sox bashers haven’t bashed all year, so maybe it is time for a new change in philosophy. Where will all this speed come from? Well it isn’t a particularly strong free agent class, so look for the Sox to groom Jerry Owens, who has been pretty good so far this season. Speed should also be Kenny Williams top target in trades. The Sox were said to be coveting Jacob Ellsbury from the Red Sox in a deal for Mark Buehrle; Bill Simmons said Ellsbury was the fastest Red Sox player ever. One silver lining heading into next year is the Sox have a lot of where they can insert fast players. They really don’t have an outfielder (unless Owens pans out), and Juan Uribe certainly should be back next season.
